From your article:

Very different cases. This woman was convicted of going to retrieve a firearm in order to re-enter the situation that caused her (claimed) fear of grave bodily harm or death... No big surprise that both her stand your ground, and self-defense claims were rejected...

Agreed, she did show bad judgement in going over to her ex's home. She should have waited for law to arrive to safely handle the situation.

Things escalated due to her bad judgement and she felt fearful for her life so she fired her gun.

Anything sound familiar here? Yes they are different cases and different issues at play. But Zimmerman didn't commit a felony by aggressively pursuing Martin with his gun-no. He did make a bad judgement and took matters into his own hands, brandishing a gun in the process to protect himself when things escalated beyond his control. His wounds look like a girl fight scrap if you ask me...not even a black eye..come ON.

No. She went and retrieved a firearm and re-entered the home. The jury would have been instructed to evaluate whether that was consistent with a reasonable person's behavior if they feared death. Short of a firefighter, marine, or soldier, reasonable people don't re-enter a situation that they truly believe represents an imminent threat to their lives-thus the jury convicted her. Sounds like the law worked just fine. Perhaps the law that people here should be moaning about is the 10-20-Life law.....just sayin'

And again, this bit about "Zimmerman didn't commit a felony by aggressively pursuing Martin with his gun" is simple conjecture. You don't know the details surrounding this, nor do I-this is probably the most mysterious part of this whole affair- how the confrontation ensued. And yes, Sousuke is exactly right.....no claim has been made, to my knowledge, that the crime of "brandishing" occurred.

Your evaluation of the severity of his wounds is irrelevant. What is relevant is his evaluation of the level of jeopardy he faced that night, and the how a jury might assess that under Florida law.

Luckily, our rule of law isn't in any way based on "there is no evidence that didn't occur."

I added (as far as we know) because we don't know every single witness account. I don't have a law degree but I don't think there is any rule against new witnesses stepping forward if they saw anything. You just never know.

I but I have trouble believing that Martin, who weighed considerably less (40lbs), could have wrestled Zimmerman to the ground and hold him there for long.

Note that Trayvon Martin's weight is listed as 160 pounds, not the 140 pounds that you read all over, as in this lead paragraph from a Daily Beast story today. His height is listed as 6 feet; George Zimmerman is listed at 5 feet 9 inches, but no weight is given

http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/news_columnists_ezorn/2012/03/trayvon-martin-shooting-death-initial-police-reports.html

Literally tens of thousands of publications and media outlets have reported that George Zimmerman weighed 250 pounds and Trayvon Martin weighed 140 pounds.

The weight of 250 pounds for George Zimmerman was based on a police report that was over six years old. He has since lost a lot of weight. Newer pictures of Zimmerman show a much slimmer man.

Media outlets have reported several different heights for George Zimmerman. They have ranged from 5'2" to 5'9". The Sanford police report from the night of the shooting lists Zimmerman at 5'9".

The police surveillance video, recently shown on ABC National News shows a fairly slender George Zimmerman the night of the attack. A close friend of Zimmerman, Joe Oliver, says Zimmerman is 5'8" and currently only weighs 170 pounds.

This was probably a conservative estimate, as his family has reported his height at 6'2".

Literally, thousands of media outlets have either reported false weights, or have stated "Zimmerman outweighed Martin by 100 pounds." As far as I can tell, not a single media outlet has printed a retraction.

Last Wednesday, March 21st, I wrote an article about how the media was

http://www.examiner.com/article/george-zimmerman-weighs-170-trayvon-martin-160

The most amazing thing about this case is how much garbage is on the internet about it.

Some people even think Martin had a bottle of ice tea.

One officer who lifted Martin's shirt at the scene "felt a large, cold can in the center pocket" of the teen's hoodie, which was the iced tea he'd bought just minutes before. Blood was later spotted on his Skittles, along with a lighter, a T-Mobile brand cell phone, headphones and $40 and some change

Don't forget also, Martin's autopsy report lists his correct height as 5'11" which would make him exactly 2 in. taller than Zimmerman.

This Al Sharpton obsession is bizarre.

Can you link me to where Obama said it was not self defense?

You seem to have quotes other than this one, so I'd like to read them please. :)

I'm guessing your posting on this thread yet you don't have a clue about this story. I mean why would you be posting on something in regards to the Zimmerman - Martin shooting yet not even know the background of this?

Who do you think made a mint off of going down to Florida and start a big racist thing while having photo shoots of himself and the parents ? Try Rev. Al Sharpton. I'm pretty sure you don't have a clue about ol Rev. Al's background. Google "Tawana Brawley" so you have a better idea of what Rev. Al is all about.

Now do you know who Eric Holder is and who his boss is? Do you know why Eric Holder got involved? Maybe you should check up on that before you post on any Trayvon Martin threads.

Now google what Obama said about all this. Do some homework, get a clue and then come back and post on this thread. But for now it's obvious with that post of yours I quoted that you really don't know what any of this is about.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Would pulling back one's clothing or jacket to make visible your gun to the person you are in a confrontation with be called brandishing? I honestly don't know, but in any case, if Martin found out that Zimmerman had a gun during their altercation and had no idea who Zimmerman was or why Zimmerman had followed him, that would be justification for Martin to defend his life accordingly, by any means necessary.

Are any of Zimmerman's injuries death threatening? He was an ex-bouncer, after all, and outweighed the kid by 50 or 100 pounds. He had no problem throwing drunk women on their arses, or picking fights with alcoholic beverage control officers.

"Outweighed the kid by 50 - 100 lbs? What is it... 50lbs or 100lbs?

Yep. My estimation of Zimmerman being a good 40lbs heavier than Martin is based on the what I read from the autopsy and reports as well as visual estimation based on those photos of him:

Martin: 5ft. 11in. and weighed just under 160.

Zimmerman: 5ft. 9in and no reported weight, however, he once worked as a bouncer and has worked as a security guard. Typically, employers look for bulkier guys for those types of jobs. Judging from those photos, I'd estimate his weight between 185 and 205 lbs.

As despicable as the Tawana Brawley case was, the slime ball Al "Not So" Sharpton ratcheted it up a notch with the Freddie's Fashion Mart incident as the chief instigator... oh, and let us not forget his role in the Crown Heights Riot and the public lynching he gave the young men in the Duke Lacrosse case. It's never good when that clown shows up.

There's a welder here in town who we call "spick". He's a half mexican half white guy that weighs maybe 150lbs - 160lbs tops. Iv'e seen him clean guys clocks that went an easy 220lbs or more. He's not the only skinny wiry type guy I know that does this with ease. So that thing about Zimmerman out weighing Martin means a big fat zero.

This case reminds me a bit of the Duke Lacrosse team fiasco. The state prosecutor lost his job over that one and got sued to boot. I haven't read up on the Crown Heights riot but I'm going to do that now. Al Sharpton is a slime ball and then some.
