Oath at AOS interview

Planning ahead for our interview, my husband asked me what "swearing in" would involve. I believe I read on here that they don't use a bible. Do they make you say "so help me god"? If so, are you allowed to request a modified oath? And, would requesting that perhaps start us off on a bad note with the interviewer?

I kind of want him to just "play ball" and not risk it, but he's very principled and this is a sticky point for him. Any thoughts?

Yes, they do in court and it's on the money too. It is a Christian nation still.

At the interview there is no Bible or God mentioned though - likely in respect that so many immigrants come from nations that are not Christian at the core.

July 2005 - met my awesome, hot, amazing love in Lousiana.
July 2006 - Married said love and moved to Canada.
June 2011 - Entered US to visit family, decided to stay.
Feb. 2012 - Sent paperwork to Chicago.

May 2012 - Received green card.

Well that's a relief. I had visions of him trying to debate with interviewer. We should be ok. I don't expect to end up in court anytime soon. :)

Haha. I have my ways.

It isn't required - you can just affirm that you will tell the truth to the best of your knowledge. Even some Christians prefer not to swear on the Bible, based on an old testament scripture regarding not swearing to anything.

I didn't have an AOS interview but at the US embassy interview they just asked " do you swear to tell the whole truth " and I said yes. Then the interviewer said ok we will begin!

I would assume its more or less the same in the US.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

I just remember by wife said "yes" instead of I do. IO said that would work.

Yep, all true. They don't ask you to repeat the oath. They just ask you to say "yes" or "I do" after they read the oath to you.

12/15/2009 - K1 Visa Interview - APPROVED!

12/29/2009 - Married in Oakland, CA!

08/18/2010 - AOS Interview - APPROVED!

05/01/2013 - Removal of Conditions - APPROVED!

As was mentioned above, there are even Christian groups that do not feel comfortable taking oaths, particularly on the bible, so "affirm" is always available as an alternative to "swear" in any US government process, and no, the Bible is not used, at least not at the US consulates.

12/24/2010 I proposed. She accepted and stayed.

02/25/2011 Married!

03/19/2012 FINALLY submitted the AOS paperwork: I-130, I-485, I-765, etc.

03/23/2012 Received notification that USCIS has received everything.

03/26/2012 Biometrics Appointment Notice: April 23, 2012.

04/02/2012 NOA's received. Now we wait...

04/23/2012 Biometrics completed.

05/18/2012 EAD card mailed but not yet received.

06/06/2012 Rough interview but we think we're approved! Website says i485 status "Card Production".

06/12/2012 We received the "Welcome the United States" letters! Website says Green Card was mailed.

LIMBO: Green card lost in mail. Facing the possibility of paying hundreds in fees and basically repeating the entire process.

All good now! USPS lost it, then found it.

04/24/14 Back to VJ to get help with I-751, Removal of Conditions.

05/31/14 Mailed I-751 finally, with less than a week to deadline!

06/02/14 NOA1 (that was fast!)

07/01/14 Biometrics

7/25/14 Approved for Removal of Conditions

I am not sure if you are making light of the fact that the country is so far gone from its original state that they may not see it as Christian or noting the fact that the founding fathers were primarily Freemasons and not Christian in fath. ;)

For what it is worth, our IO today actually did say. "...so help you God."

My suggestion to the OP is if this happens to let it slide...not a good idea to start your interview off on a bad note because your hubby doesn't want to acknowledge God. Leave that for after he has a green card. ;)

Ours didn't, so I guess there are differing experiences.
