I don't know if I'm cursed or what...

I received my GC today, of course I'm very happy, it's only been 30 days since POE.

BUT, the place where the laser engraved fringerprint is supposed to be is empty. It's just a white rectangle with nothing in it. It doesn't say anything (I found threads where people had "fingerprints not available" in it, it's not the case for me).

I don't want to send it back. Really not. With the CBP data entry mess I'm going through, this is the real proof I'm an LPR (people don't understand that a stamped immigrant visa is the same thing).

Am I going to get into any kind of trouble because of this??

So bad your green card doesn't have the fingerprint!!! They just made a mistake and the bad thing is that if you send your green card back, it might take over 4 months for you to get a new one. Have you called them?? This is so bad...!! The other solution you have is to wait until you remove the conditions to get a new green card.

I called and of course they were clueless. They told me to file an I-90 to have it replaced, but I DON'T want to send it back...

I guess my exact question is: am I required to have it corrected? Or can I just stay like that? I mean, there's my picture, signature, and my name, DOB, etc... everything is correct. Who knows, maybe my fingerprint is actually included in the electronic data stored in it. It's just not engraved on the top.

I think something is not right..

My old EAD card from OPT says "fingerprints not available" on it.

But I think this is because it was from back when they did not do fingerprinting.

Your GC not only does not say that, it's just blank..

I think you had better get this taken care of.

Make paper and electronic copies of the greencard if you have to send it off.

Yes, I understand, if you send your green card back, you will need to wait a good amount of months... I don't think there's a problem at all, for example in my case, my Green card has my maiden name, and of course when filling the documents I said my name would change so I called them and like you just said, "fill the form I90.." I will wait for removing the conditions to change the name on the Green card. They have your complete data information and also you have a bar code on the back part of the card. All will be good.

Wait, how do you know something is missing? How is the average regular person supposed to know what a GC looks like? Maybe it is actually correct?

And for travelling abroad: I have my immigrant visa in my passport, stamped with entry as CR1 expiring on April 2013... So my understanding is that I can use this to re-enter the US after travelling abroad (I had extensive conversation with the CBP to try and fix the mess they created by misspelling my name at entry, and that's exactly what they told me). Anyway, I don't have plans to travel abroad anytime soon.

I think what I will do is wait until I get my driving license, a perfectly recognizable form of ID, until I make an Infopass appointment and get ready to send it back. Of course, with the database issue created by CBP, getting my license is gonna take some more time.

No. Where the fingerprint should be is just an empty, white area.

How about making an infopass at your local uscis office? They will be able to give you a straight answer and put your mind at ease. I really don't think it will cause you any issues down the roaed but do the infopass.

It took me some months to take that Infopass appointment but I did... it proved totally useless, how surprising!

I spent about 3 minutes there, and I'm generous.

I showed my GC to the officer, and when I pointed the white area, he said it was normal, that I had "the new kind" of green card, and that the fingerprint was stored on the magnetic part in the back. I said I saw someone else's, and there was the fingerprint in black on the front, but he denied, saying I was wrong and it must have been an "old kind". Of course I know this is BS, since everyone receives their GC WITH their fingerprint printed on the bottom right corner, but what was I supposed to tell him? That he was a liar?

So, all I can do is hope that the fingerprint IS stored correctly with the magnetic data, and live in fear of crossing a border for the next 1.5 years. Yeeha.

If you disbelieve the information given, set another InfoPass appointment and get a different officer. If you get the same answer and are dissatisfied, ask to speak with the supervisor.

Chill out - twice I crossed the border with conditional green card, no one read anything (electronically) off it - they read my passport, took fingerprints and photos and just took a quick look at the actual GC.
