Hello,

I am contemplating using Fed Ex for shipping a gift box to my Fiancé in the Philippines.

I know that many people use Fed Ex for shipping Documents and petition paperwork and it

seems that most have good experiences regarding that. I am looking for experiences from

others that have attempted to ship gift items. I will be shipping 2 pair of women’s jeans,

and two women’s t-shirts, pair of children’s shorts/pants, two children’s shirts, 2 pair of

children’s shoes. 2 leapster games (not the leapster device, just the games) digital picture

key chain, 3 bottles of children’s vitamins. I am considering sending a purse, sunglasses and

umbrella that I bought for my sweetheart, designer in nature. The total value that I paid for

all the items is about $500. The shipping estimate is around $250.

I am just wondering if the items will arrive safely. They are special items that I put

a lot of effort into finding for them and I would be really upset if they did not arrive or if

items were stolen. So from your experinces did your gift packages arrive to the Philippines

unopened, with all items in tact? Any items missing? Any issues regarding paying extra for

duty tax?

My original plan was to take them with me when I travel back to the Philippines but that may not

be until September or November. So it would be nice if they could get these items earlier.

Thank you in advance for

any advice,

Jesse

Fedex is a reliable shipping company with a great services. My hubby used to send me package using the said company, NO u wont get any charges or taxes not unless u send out any gadget devices. So far they will deliver the package in tact and right on time. Goodluck!

I always have good experience with FED EX they are a reliable delivery company. When I used to receive gift from my fiancee now husband I need to pay for custom duties and taxes upon receiving the package. When you send your package ask the fedex staff that you'll pay the tax so the recipient won't pay anything, but most likely the answer is it depends on the Custom's jurisdiction on the recipient's country. If the package you're sending is of value, they will impose tax charges.

I've heard good and bad about Fedex over there. A lot is going to depend on where its going in the country. Balikbayan boxes is about the only method of shipping that seems devoid of issues. Its slow, its cheap, its a big box, but they always seem to make it in tact and devoid of duties.

Hi Jesse...

I dont know if you know about Balik Bayan Boxes... They are a very affordable way to ship items to the philippines... It usually takes 6 weeks, ( or 8 weeks if in places like Cebu. It is door to door service. Its quite affordable ($55-65) per box ( the box is LARGE ) and they do not charge by weight, so the more you stuff in there, the better. You can find this service through a company called LBC.

Balik bayan sort of means "return people" in that it allows those working overseas the opportunity to bring their personal proiperty home to the Philippines. Anyone can use it. I would highly recommend this.

I had terrible experience with fedex. Four yrs ago, my husband sent me some gift items including ps3. I did not receive the ps3. I did not notice that the box was opened and was sealed with an ordinary adhesive tape. But fedex did not do any action to track the theft because they said the value wasnt that significant. They said the item was stolen at customs. I worked with a company that received package regularly. When customs opens or checks a package they seal it back with customs adhesive tape. We did not even use fedex when my husband sent me the documents for my interview at the USEmbassy. Use other company but not fedex.

If I were you, I would rather wait and bring it along when you go there. But if you must send I would go with one of the box carriers such as the ones mentioned by others (Forex, LBC..etc.) if they are available in your area. I've had experience with sending items using FEDEX and UPS and they are unpredictable and learned my lesson (will not ship items of value other than documents). Depending on the items your sending be prepared for custom fees and taxes that will amount to the same value or more of the items you sent. Or worst case scenario the item will never arrive! Many of the items you mentioned are available for sale in the Philippines so save you and your fiance the headache and send the money and let them buy it. I know it's more special arriving from you but not much choice.

Hello,

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses. I see that there are many experiences, good

And bad. Yes, I have heard about the Balikbayan boxes... in fact I almost had these items

shipped using Forex here in Colorado. The Forex rep told me that my shipment would take

about 38 days which I was perfectly fine with. Then he also added that if the shipment was

seized by customs it would add another 2 weeks at the port Here in the States and 2 weeks

at the port in Manila. Apparently they are cracking down on the Balikbayan shipping industry

more now. That was very sad news to me because I was very much wanting to use Forex as my

main mode of shipping things there. I still may use them in the future.

I am still trying to decide if I should risk the shipment, I may just wait. I did send

Katherine some money 2 weeks ago for the very purpose of going shopping for clothing- I really

wanted her and her daughter to have clothing and other necessities right now as opposed to waiting

for me to travel there. I know it was really fun for her as well to go shopping for a day. I may

stick to my original plan of waiting until I go there.

Thanks for all your responses, it is very much appreciated.

Jesse
