I would advise against this, it will only allow for mistakes to be made by USCIS. Your maiden name and married name will all be on the proper forms.

That is how the forms are supposed to be filled out. They won't make a mistake because she filled the forms out correctly. I did this myself just fine. :bonk:

If you have a job lined up and plan on working immediately, then you can go now and get one in your maiden name. If not, I would wait until after you're married and you get your greencard, there's no rush for a SSN other than employment. There's no need to do it twice, just to change names.

Incorrect, SSN is important for things like insurance, bank accounts, drivers permit/license. Why wait for 7+ months to be able to do this?

So we should put my wifes new name (my last name) on g325 to as her family name? Thought we where done but I geuss were not..lol

If she is changing her name, yes. Then put her maiden name under "All other names used".

You must have misread my post. Nowhere did I state the SSN is necessary for a greencard or for any immigration purposes. I also did not state it showed proof of a bonafide marriage. Not sure where you got this.

Your post made it seem like it had no other benefits other than work, and I simply said that's incorrect. It has plenty of benefits for someone new to the United States. There's not much you can do without one. It's personal preference as to WHEN they get one, but generally, the sooner the better if they want to start being added to accounts, or opening new ones, or getting identification or licenses.

The op is here asking how to fill out the forms for her greencard, the SSN was brought up by another poster. The op's main focus was on her application, a SSN has nothing to do with her greencard application, it is not important in the context of her original post.

I simply stated there was no rush for the op to get there SSN, unless they were planning to work immediately, which there isn't, I never stated there weren't any benefits in getting one. It was you who jumped all over my post stating that I was incorrect in saying that.

You must have missed my apology for mis-reading your initial post. I thought you said to put her maiden name under her married name on all of the forms, which I stated was a mistake on my part. :)

There is no "rush" to get their SSN, but AOS right now is taking over 7 months to process. That's a long time to go without being able establish any ties in the US due to not having a social security number. All to save a trip to the SSA? Doesn't seem worth it, IMO.

My wife did her AOS and got her greencard in March, it took only 3 months from the day we were married. She never even got her EAD, because the greencard came so soon. Anyway, my original statement was correct, the fact that you don't agree with it doesn't make it incorrect.

Congrats. That's definitely not the norm.

Thank you! She is Canadian also! I see they lost your medical papers, that stinks. I wish you luck. I see you came in through Detroit, are you from Windsor? My wife is from Windsor.

Getting insurance is important for some people, waiting 3 months is a long time for that. SSN is not just for working.

I'm not, I'm from Ottawa. We stayed in Windsor before driving across the border, though. :)

I'm not sure what kind of insurance you're talking about, but I'm assuming health. You don't need a SSN to obtain health insurance. I put my wife on mine the day we were married.

All insurance. Health, dental, car, they all require SSN. So does the DMV. My bank let me be added to my husbands account, provided I promptly gave them an SSN. SSN is not just for working.

My husband's insurance through his work would not add me until I could give them my SSN.

Does your husbands company have an HR dept? I find that the companies that have HR are clueless towards these situations. My company is smaller and we deal directly with the insurance agent. All they wanted was a copy of the marriage license and we were good to go and this was for Blue Cross.

No, there was no HR department. The DMV wouldn't issue me a learners permit without a SSN either. The bank wouldn't add me to my husbands bank account without assurance that I would promptly give them my SSN. SSN's are needed for many things other than working.
