Yes, there are some social security benefits that are only for US citizens. Also, they update your info in their e-verify system, so your social security number is "linked" to your US citizenship.

So go to the Social Security Office and update your info. However, we were told to wait for a couple of weeks before doing this update. Hence, in my case, I first got my US passport. I applied with routine service and got the passport in 4 weeks. After I received the passport, I went to the Social Security Office and updated my information with them.

Best of luck and congrats on your citizenship.

Yes, you can take your certificate and your driver's license. Or you can take your driver's license and your US passport.

You must also fill out form SS-5: http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf

SS-5 is a fillable form, filled that out for my wife and stepdaughter and saved that on my computer when they first received their EAD cards. Explained to them what SS was all about, and told them I needed them to have SS numbers for income tax and banking purposes, and if they wanted to get a job, need to have an SS card. They were new here and didn't no anything about our SS system.

I had them sign the forms, took their EAD cards to the SS office, its 37 miles away, and I go there on business, two weeks later they received a restricted SS card, with their now permanent numbers on it.

Ten months later they received their conditional green cards, I opened their original application form, change their status to LPR and the date, had, them sign it, took in their new conditional green cards, about two weeks later, they received an unrestricted card.

When they received their ten year cards, practically three years later, didn't do anything with SS.

Shortly after that, my wife received her naturalization, opened up that form again, changed her status to USC, the date, had her sign it, took in her original certificate of naturalization, she dropped her maiden name, no problem, got a new card two weeks later with just her married name on it, same SS number. Always make sure the number does not change. Did the same for my stepdaughter, but two years later when she finally received her naturalization certificate. Really only had to type out that SS-5 form once for each of them. Now they are done with SS except for paying FICA taxes.

Have a five month old grandson, when he was a week old, my son filled out that SS-5 for him, took that long to get his birth certificate, went to his SS office with just his birth certificate and also received a card about two weeks later. Son needed that for his tax returns and set up a college trust fund for my grandson. They let my son sign his application understanding that my grandson didn't quite know how to sign his signature yet.

Just recently wife and stepdaughter were together in the town where our SS office is, just said, this is the office where I went to, to get your SS cards.

I try to get that at 7:50 AM ten minutes before they open so I am first in line, but they never open the door at 8:00 AM more like 8:10 AM, but this is the government. Have a big sign when you walk in, take a number and have a seat until your number is called. Sometime between my wife's and stepdaughter's final card, they decided to add an armed guard. When I walked in, told me to take a number and have a seat until I am called. Said thank you, I didn't know that.
