Hi there,

Quick question, how long after arriving in the US will a social security card be issued.

I arrived on the 23rd April, I have a job waiting but I need social security number and driving licence to start, I cannot get a licence without a social security number.

Arrived Miami via Raleigh NC, Cleared processing in about 20 mins, two finger prints and two signatures and a welcome to the United States! Job Done.

If you are in order and qualify for an SSN Card, the processing time is just a few days. They will tell you that you will receive it within two weeks, but it comes barely 7 days after you complete your application.

So if you are in order, go ahead and locate a Social Security Administration office close to you and just walk in.

Take with you your unexpired foreign passport, and proof that you are eligible to work in the U.S (your DHS-issued EAD.)

If you do not have an EAD, you could still apply for an SSN Card, but you cannot use it to work, because an SSN by itself is not an authorization to work in the U.S.

[01/10, 2018]  - DAY 323  (day 2149) (N-400) Naturalization Oath Ceremony (5 years, 10 months, 19 days)

[01/10, 2018]  - DAY 001  (day 2149) (US Passport) Applied for US Passport, regular processing

01/25, 2018]  - DAY 015  (day 2164) (US Passport) Passport in hand (5 years, 11 months, 3 days from start of Journey.)

 

AOS, N-400, & PASSPORT FOR DAUGHTER [OF HUSBAND TO USC]

[06/14, 2013] - DAY 001 Mailed package to Chicago Lockbox via USPS overnight
[11/21, 2013] - Day 153 SSN and 10-year GC in hand

09/01, 2021]  - (day 3001) (US Passport) Passport in hand (8 years, 2 months, 18 days from start of Journey.)

I didn't even apply for mine! I was waiting for the two weeks suggested to make sure I was in the system but the card arrived in the mail 8 days after I entered through Atlanta.

Take with you your unexpired foreign passport, and proof that you are eligible to work in the U.S (your DHS-issued EAD.)

If you do not have an EAD, you could still apply for an SSN Card, but you cannot use it to work, because an SSN by itself is not an authorization to work in the U.S.

The OP is entering under an IR1/CR1 visa so does not need an EAD. The entry stamp in his passport acts as a temporary Green Card and gives him authorization to work.

If you checked the appropriate box on your DS-230 form for the visa application, it's supposed to come in the mail within 3 weeks after your arrival. If it doesn't, go to an SS office, and they should be able to get you an SS card within a week.

On rare occasions, something goes wrong and you have to wait longer (my case at the moment). However, you are still allowed to work until your SSN has been created (says so on the letter they gave me).

CR1 Visa

USCIS STAGE: 16 days No expedite request but USC residing abroad
NVC STAGE: 19 days from case # to case complete
03/27/12: interview at Paris embassy - APPROVED
04/12/12: POE San Diego

ROC
01/15/14: sent I-751 application

05/14/14: received card production notification by e-mail, approval date 05/13

Naturalization

02/01/24: N-400 submitted online; Biometrics reuse notice received immediately online; "case being actively reviewed" after a couple hours

02/09/24: received NOA1 by mail

02/10/24: received biometrics reuse notice by mail

04/08/24: interview scheduled for 05/14. Received "We have taken an action in your case" email.

05/14/24: approved at interview, same-day oath ceremony in San Francisco 🥳 🇺🇸

 

Passport

06/10/24: application submitted at post office for passport book and card, paid for expedited processing and shipping

06/24/24: received email notification that passport was approved, then shipped with tracking number

06/25/24: passport received

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
