Try writing down the key stages and the documents you will need for the K-1. You need an initial set of documents for your application and then further documents for the medical and interview stage. Try to concentrate on the initial requirements so you can get your papers in order. After you have done that and made sense of it, somewhat, the next stage should seem a little clearer, maybe. :P

No. Just fill out the forms as simply and accurately as possible. Proof-read. Don't read too much into questions, wondering what they mean. They mean what they say. It's easy to overthink things in this process - don't get into that habit or you'll drive yourself nuts.

Check out the example forms. They're a lifesaver.

Thank you again.. I saw the examples section and it looks like a useful resource.

Hehe.

I would advise making your paperwork very organized so that your adjudicator can find everything easily. Split your documents into sections. Use a paperclip to secure each section of paperwork. Use tabs to divide each section, make a table of contents to go under your cover letter. Use a bulldog clip to secure the whole thing together. They don't like dealing with folders.

Like Coconuts said, follow the guides and use the example forms, they should make everything pretty clear. Try filling in the forms and then come back to read them tomorrow and check that everything looks correct, after your brain has had time to recover from all the information you are trying to absorb.

Good luck! :)

Oh and always send your documents with a confirmation so that you can see when they were delivered.

Question... my finance routinely comes to hang with me for 2 -3 weeks at a time in NY.. Is this a problem?

Not if she's not doing this too often. If she's spending 2-3 weeks in NY, then going to Canada for a few days, then coming back for another 2-3 weeks, they might have an issue with that. It will look like she's living mostly in the US.

Well, thats pretty much what it is.. Will her ties to canada help? What would such a problem result in?

It's a problem if she's spending more time in the US than she is in Canada - which it sounds like she's doing. She is living in the United States, basically, having abandoned her residence in Canada. At least that's what it would look like to anyone investigating it. If she ever gets questioned about this, what would she say? How would she prove that she's still "living" in Canada?

Canadians are allowed to spend 6 months in the United States per calendar year. They can split this up into several trips, or they can do it in one visit.

If it's more than six months, they can consider her a taxable resident.

Thank you all so much.. Right now trying to figure out how to get my time line into my signature is hard enough.. HA

I just figured that out last week.. so you are way ahead there.. My fiance is Canadian and K1 was the way to go for us because after we are married, we do not want to be apart anymore. He was denied entry at a land border crossing twice because of the risk of "illegally immigrating". We were told... "ya never know in the matters of love". So we started the K1 process and we are April filers.

I for one went by the guidelines posted here, used the sample cover sheets, and all the instructions on how to file ourselves. It seems overwhelming at first, but take it one step at a time and when you are finished, you will have a big stack of papers to send off but, you will know that you did everything with great advice and help from fellow members here that have been through what you are just starting.

Good luck on your journey!

Live for today because you never know what tomorrow will bring!

interesting.. but what makes someone "living" anywhere? legal address? job? school? i don't know.. hmm... could be tricky. Technically she is still living in canada. Her shoes are there LOL

Job, school, a lease to an apartment/house, etc. Proof that she isn't residing in the US.

If she had to bring ties to Canada - what would she bring? What's allowing her to spend 2-3 weeks at a time in the US and only coming back to Canada for a couple days?

Finished school, no job, lives at home with her parents... so nothing is "allowing" her, its more like nothing is holding her back.
