Yay! I personally think that a person with no documentation allowing them to become invested in the act of being a resident, ie get a license, can be classed as a resident.

With GC in hand, you might try SS office again, but since they already initiated "verification" they might not be able to do another request. Hopefully with the GC update the verification will be over soon.

Yeah, I'm happy to get good news in the middle of this mess! I'll wait to have the card in hand before I pop up the Champagne though.

I can only hope that USCIS will reply to the verification quickly, since with A# they can see all my information and check my status. But I still need the issue fixed, because I'll run into the same problem at the DMV, which in CA is required by law to make a SAVE check before issuing a license (to make sure they don't give licenses to illegal aliens). Plus any other agency/local authority using SAVE.

I got a response from the CBP complaint department, following my complaint filed online: they basically say that I should wait for the local deferred inspection office to fix the mistake, and add that if they can't, then they could get involved.

Well, at least they replied within 12 hours.

A few more facts today:

I received an answer for my online complaint at ssa.gov. They basically say initiating a USCIS verification is standard procedure, and they do not need to consult or get the approval of the alien to do that.

I received my green card. Great. Now there's a new problem: my fingerprint is missing on the front. The area where it should be is just empty. I guess I have a bad kharma... :crying:

I called the local SSA to see if there was any progress (since I am indeed very legally here and the USCIS is aware of that), and the not-so-friendly lady I talked to told me I'm not in the "pending verification" list, which is a good sign that an SSN has been generated. I'm taking that statement very carefully but I'll be at the local office first thing Monday morning to be given my SSN, if it's available.

Another interesting thing is that when I explained I was a new immigrant and came in Monday to get an SSN card, she immediately said "oh, you were given a letter saying it would take 4 weeks". Well, yeah, but that's not what is supposed to happen to all new immigrants... however she sounded like it is.

That's exactly how I feel...

I have decided that I will keep the GC as it is until I get my driving license, so that I have an acceptable form of ID and don't need to carry my passport around again. Of course that implies getting my SSN, and then having the DMV check me in SAVE again... What do you think about it?

Sorry to hear your troubles. Our Social Security office was not just stupid, but malicious too.

Told us she was not eligible

Did the paperwork wrong three times

Lost her file

would not let us re-apply

found the file too late and told us to commit a felony - change her I-94 stamp

told our Senator to go pound sand when we had her try to help.

Finally after getting her green card they STILL TRIED TO STOP US, demanding certified copies of the marriage certificate, which was completely unnecessary since the name on the Green Card was the same name for her social security number. But we got it because we can't force them to give us a card.

FINALLY, a brand new Russian Immigrant employee arrived. Not a supervisor. A BRAND NEW employee. She simply looked at the instructions, and did our paperwork. The senior employee actually came over, stood behind her computer screen and tried to stop her! But she pointed out on the instruction sheet she had that all she needed was the green card. Every time this malicious employee refused us, she was beaming. But when this new employee served us, you could see how upset it made the senior employee that she couldn't turn us down again.

OMG... it's amazing how these agencies can totally screw your life if they decide to, or if they don't do their job!

I really suggest you file a complaint with SSA. It can't hurt, right? I received an answer within 2 days after filing the complaint on their website.

As for my situation... basically, EVERY federal agency I've had to deal with since I arrived messed up: CBP, SSA, USCIS. It's kind of disheartening.

Today I went back to the SSA and got my number

It looks like it was generated the day after I went there, since my card was sent on May 9th... So much for the 4 weeks verification! I'm still waiting for the card but it should be in the mail this week.

I went to the DMV to apply for a driving license, showed my GC (without the fingerprint, and they didn't seem to care) and gave my SSN, and they processed my application without any problem (I took and failed the written test :P). No word about me not being in the database or anything, although my understanding is that they make the SAVE check before processing the application. Maybe I'm wrong and they actually do that in the end when they are ready to send you the license? Anyway, it went fine. Now I just need to read the driving handbook!

 You're on a roll now!

Yep they check your eligibility/immigration status. The license probably has the digit 9 under restrictions. I was able to follow it online when it was approved, sent to print and mailed.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that:

And did you mean that they make the eligibility check at the time you apply, or later?

Anyway, I studied the handbook last time and took the written test again today, and passed! :)

They at least verified it before issuing me anything. Well, first the test and then verifying.

On the card it'll say what kind of restrictions apply, e.g. has to wear glasses or lenses. Their little "code" for that is "A" in Indiana. The "9" is "check immigration status".

Congrats :) Great not having to worry about the test again. I was all excited about driving today - my husband kicked his feet up before I had the car started, and I'm guessing he was thrilled too not having to always drive.
