Interesting about the mortgage statement. I've been discussing doing a refi to get my wife on the mortgage, and they have no problem putting my wife on it at very good interest rate to. Currently she's on our bank accounts, our bills, plus we recently got her a merchant credit card. We want those mailings with her name at our address for when the ROC becomes the next step. Plus we want to build her credit rating. The bank also said they'd be happy to do the auto loan, but their rates are not very good for them and I'd most likely get a better rate through the dealer. The reason places have asked to see her card, is currently the rating agencies have not entered her into the ratings yet.

What do you think is a "very good interest rate"? If it's any higher than you're already paying it's not worth it. Honestly, have a look at the ROC thread in my signature that lists what I'm sending (and also some other ideas). The title (deed) has me listed as a spouse (for survivorship reasons) but I'm not on the mortgage itself. I am also on health insurance, dental insurance, tony is on my life insurance, we have a joint phone bill, 2 joint bank accounts.. that's all plenty.

Its currently at 5 percent, so right now is a good time to consider a refi. We could get easily get 4 percent now if not a touch lower. Of course there are costs involved with getting a refi, so I haven't crunched all the numbers or checked with more sources yet. BTW the other outfits I checked on the car loan had no issue with the notation on the SS card and she'll be on the car loan. Soon hopefully she'll have some type of credit score and record.

I had no credit history as well as no credit score. I tried to apply for a Kohl's card but was rejected due to no history (not because of a bad score, the denial says "no credit history available").

Our mortgage would have put me on but we've got a mortgage with less than 4% interest, it would have been higher with me on it so it really doesn't matter. I personally wouldn't waste time refinancing the loan, it really isn't that important to the process.

If you're looking to build her history I suggest a credit card like: http://www.capitalone.com/creditcards/mastercard-secured-credit-card/r/?linkid=WWW_1010_CARD_TGUNS11_CCBRWALL_C3_36_T_CP32123RW I got this card in August of last year. I used www.creditkarma.com to check my credit score and I used the free yearly credit history check to check my progress. I have a score of over 700 now, and it went up pretty quick. When I get a job again I'll apply for a Kohl's card or Walmart card (probably Walmart) to build a little more. I'm pretty please with my progress actually :D

I think this is resourceful. I applied for Kroger's debit card but it wasn't issued I guess because I don't have credit score too. I felt this shouldn't have been the case in a debit card but it's, same with walmart -won't issue me a perm debit card. I prefer the kroger's because it offers u point for fuel after buying.

My question about the removal of word on SSC is:

When the word states 'Not valid for work' can you change this with the ead? or there is no need to do so or should rather wait till your GC is ready?

It should not have said not valid for work if you got it during the time the I-94 was current. The link Vanessa&Tony posted earlier, clearly confirms the EAD gets a card status of "valid for work only with DHS Authorization". I think if you gave that card to a prospective employer with 'Not valid for work' written on it, you'd stand a good chance of getting sent home and not getting the job. I do not think the SS administration automatically gets your status update from the DHS when it changes. They appear to only look at the system when someone requests a change in status or name, then they confirm it with the DHS.

Here's the relevant link Vanessa&Tony posted.

I got my SSC when my I-94 was current in fact I was barely 3 weeks and some days in the states. I was expected to come back for an update if I intend to change the word after applying for my EAD. This is what they say:

Types of SSN cards

I am just asking if I can go ahead with Job before changing the word once my EAD is at hand.

They should not have issued that type of SSN to begin with. You should have been given the one that states you cannot work without authorization, not that it is not valid for work at all. Yes, go back to the SSA and have it fixed and changed.

No I doubt you will be able to work. You need an SSN and an EAD to work. If the SSN comes back as “NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT”, you're probably going to be told to go home or they'll ask to see that during the interview and say they can't hire you. The problem is you should not have gotten one saying “NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT" in the first place. As long as the K-1 holder has a valid I-94 they should have gotten the card noted as requiring DHS permission. Someone screwed up to begin with. You might be able to work for someone if they don't ask to see your SS card, but almost everyone does now. And if they check with the SS administration, the SSA is going to say you can't work. I'd be working to clear this up as soon as the EAD is in hand. It shouldn't take too long to get a new card noted correctly.

OK!. Although it took them four weeks to produce it then I think they said it will be lesser with an update. I also feel I should better try another SSA office because if it shouldn't have been reading 'not valid for work' and it is, then somebody in the office don't know what they should be doing.

Yep someone definitely screwed up. I got mine in 2 weeks from arrival and it said "DHS Authorisation required" because a K1 is work authorised (able to get a work permit).

My wife's only took about two weeks to arrive at our house with the "work only with authorization" note. And yes, someone screwed up at the SS office. But if you read the SSA's manual, I can see how they could easily be misinformed at the office. It does not clearly spell out which annotation the newly arrived K-1 immigrant should get. It does clearly spell out that the EAD holder can get a SS card with that annotation.

They should have directed me to another SSA office if they weren't sure instead of making such an expensive mistake. Thank God it's still amendable. It's laxity on their path, at least, they should have been updating themselves properly. They weren't even sure if I should be given SSC back then  .
