SSC removal of "valid for work with..

My thought is a green card is also an Authorization from DHS to work. Which I know you can remove the statement with. Then finding the note about the I-766 EAD card, being proof to change your work status on the SS card. I just haven't found explicitly how you remove the "Valid for work only with DHS Authorization" statement. The only place I've found to mention the Green Card on the SS web site, also states the EAD.

More searching turns up this though, which is probably saying because the EAD is temporary, they won't remove it.

The third type of card bears, in addition to the individual's name and SSN, the legend VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION. We issue this card to people with DHS permission to work temporarily in the United States.

While the un-notated card is defined as

The first type of card shows the individual's name and Social Security number (SSN) only. This is the card most people have and reflects the fact the card holder can work in the United States without restriction. We issue this card to:

U.S. citizens; or

Noncitizens lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence and noncitizens with DHS permission to work permanently in the United States (e.g., refugees and asylees).

EAD is a DHS authorization mentioned on the SS card. You cannot remove that statement from SS card with an EAD. You can remove it only after GC is presented at the SSA office.

Is it required to have the "valid for work only with DHS authorisation" annotation removed on your SSC after your green card is approved? By which I mean, once the whole process is done and dusted can you just carry on with life or must you go and have that wording removed by taking your GC to your local SSA office?

For those who want to change status- non immmig to immig they have to and a replacement card will be sent. I would suggest that they have to appear personally in such offices and are dotted in various cities and bring your gc or papers verifying such.- Do you really need an sss to loan a car? How about if you use your state id? SSN is important in finding a job but a GC or EAD are the most important infact these are the basis for employment- this is the 2004 law and above... while below this year (2004) one can work with an ssn even without GC or EAD.. i've read it somewhere... which means that what you had worked for before 2004 can be credited to your SSN pension... it takes ten years of work to get a pension if not special case... also why did you not make your wife as one of your extensions for your credit card so she may have some credit history- no one gives a damn to her ssn

It is the NUMBER that is important not the card. My SSC is in a safe place and it actually has the wording "NOT VALID FOR IDENTIFICATION. FOR TAX PURPOSES ONLY." Boy has that chaged :) . I think I have shown my SSC a total of maybe once in my life. All I do is rattle off the number. When we went to put my wife on the bank account and get a credit card I rattled off her number for her and they never asked to see the card. For employment you can use a List A item like the GC or passport for USCs. I use my passport when changing jobs. Much easier than going and getting the SSC. My wife tried for a Macy's CC a couple of months after getting her SSN and was declined. It was not until I added her to my bank accounts, investments, and got her a CC that she now gets all those CC offers in the mail. So her credit is getting better as her debit to equity is very, very small.

You might try building your wife's credit before taking out a loan with her name on it as the inter rate will be very high. That is the main reason my wife is not on the mortgage.

Good luck,

Dave

No, you don't have to remove it.

I still haven't removed it. The thought of going to the SSN and waiting in line again is torturous! I haven't had to show it to anyone and if I did, all I would need to show with it is the GC to show the authorization is what I figure.

That's what I was thinking, thanks.

I believe you do have to go and update your status if you become a naturalised US citizen though; I assume at that point those words would be removed (if you hadn't had it done previously) as part of that process.

Is the EAD enough to remove the notation "Valid for work only with DHS Authorization" on the SS card, or is the green card required first?

Nope its not sufficient. I tried to do that before I got my green card and I was told I couldn't. I had to wait to get it before i removed the restrictions.

The stamp goes with the EAD approval, GC overrides all of that and you get a new Social Card without the stamp.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

Agree with Harpa. She has no credit score and that is probably why she was denied. It also indicates she's not a permanent resident yet and it could be a policy not to authorise someone who is less likely to stay in the US. I know in australia it's a common problem where international students get phone plans (where you pay for the phone in the bill) and then just don't pay the bill before they leave so those students are a much higher risk now.

I personally think you overreacted. I'm not on the mortgage of our house because of my lack of credit score (interest would have SUCKED) but it's not really that big of a deal honestly. I personally would have put it on hold for a bit and asked around to see if other companies had the same issue, and they probably would have.

I could understand if they don't want to give her a loan on her own because she has no credit score. I was going to be the primary on the loan, and I have an excellent credit rating. What upsets me, is they will only give the loan to me alone, and not allow my wife to be on the loan so she can build a credit rating. In either case, I'm on the hook for the loan amount. I may not even have used them for the loan, its all dependent on which place I've requested pre-approvals from gives the best rate. There's a big difference between someone with no credit rating getting credit, and someone with no credit being included on a loan with someone with excellent credit. My business goes to businesses that help me in life. If they're going to make money off of me, they better be willing to work with me and give me something of value for my money. If they won't or can't work with me on something I want, my business goes to the company that will. That is why I will no longer do business with them. They can have their policy, I also have mine. BTW my bank is ok with my wife being on the mortgage if we refinance. I've already been discussing it with them as to what our best options are.

Here's the link you want: https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211510 Scroll down to the table at C.1.c.

Thanks, that is exactly what I was looking for to confirm things. I guessed their had to be somewhere they clearly stated it, but I was having no luck finding it on their web site.

Interesting about the mortgage statement. I've been discussing doing a refi to get my wife on the mortgage, and they have no problem putting my wife on it at very good interest rate to. Currently she's on our bank accounts, our bills, plus we recently got her a merchant credit card. We want those mailings with her name at our address for when the ROC becomes the next step. Plus we want to build her credit rating. The bank also said they'd be happy to do the auto loan, but their rates are not very good for them and I'd most likely get a better rate through the dealer. The reason places have asked to see her card, is currently the rating agencies have not entered her into the ratings yet.

You should update it when you become a citizen because the SS payout upon retirement or payout to your spouse on your death is bigger if you are a citizen. I think the same applies for the difference between non-immigrant and LPR, so I would think that you should update your status when receiving LPR, but I am not sure about that. Maybe USCIS tells SS office automatically that you are a LPR. It doesn't matter what the card says, but I think updating status is a good thing.

I had no credit history as well as no credit score. I tried to apply for a Kohl's card but was rejected due to no history (not because of a bad score, the denial says "no credit history available").

Our mortgage would have put me on but we've got a mortgage with less than 4% interest, it would have been higher with me on it so it really doesn't matter. I personally wouldn't waste time refinancing the loan, it really isn't that important to the process.

If you're looking to build her history I suggest a credit card like: http://www.capitalone.com/creditcards/mastercard-secured-credit-card/r/?linkid=WWW_1010_CARD_TGUNS11_CCBRWALL_C3_36_T_CP32123RW I got this card in August of last year. I used www.creditkarma.com to check my credit score and I used the free yearly credit history check to check my progress. I have a score of over 700 now, and it went up pretty quick. When I get a job again I'll apply for a Kohl's card or Walmart card (probably Walmart) to build a little more. I'm pretty please with my progress actually :D
