Aloha!! My fiance also plan to get a lawyer and he talked to two lawyers. The other one ask $2000 and the other ask $2500. But we ended up not getting anyone of them, Because you dont really need to get a lawyer to file a petition for fiance visa..You can do it yourself!!! All you need to do is follow the instructions, get the documents needed, fill up the form and send it.. You can check the K1 visa guide for detailed instructions, and you will be good.. NO need to get a lawyer.. Save your money because there are still a lot of expenses that you need to deal with, like the airline ticket..

If you have questions just PM me.. I would love to help you.. God Bless and Good luck!!

Check this out to know the risk of getting a lawyer!

Don't waste your money. Follow the guides precisely, resaearch on here and ask questions. Many bad stories because a lawyer just fills out info you give him and that is when errors are introduced. He may not have your best interests in mind and time. Only use one if you have unique difficult issues.

If it's just you and your fiancé with no kids, divorces, or a serious criminal record involved, you should be fine without hiring an attorney. But, even if you do decide to use their services, your fiancé should still read up on all the ins and outs of this process to understand the different pieces of the puzzle and to know which questions to ask of the attorney.

Part One: The K-1 Visa Journey:

USCIS Receipt of I-129F: January 24, 2012 | Petition Approval: June 15, 2012 (No RFEs)
Interview: October 24, 2012 - Review | Visa Delivered: October 31, 2012

Part Two: Entry and Adjusting Status:

POE: November 18, 2012 (at SFO) - Review
Wedding: December 1, 2012 | Social Security: New cards received on December 7, 2012.
AOS Package (I-485/I-765/I-131) NOA1: February 19, 2013 | Biometrics Appt.: March 18, 2013
AP/EAD Approved: April 29, 2013 | Card Received: May 6, 2013 | AOS Interview Appt.: May 16, 2013 - Approved Review Card Received: May 24, 2013

Part Three: Removal of Conditions:

I agree with everyone else. Don't use a lawyer unless you have a complicated situation. I felt the same as you when I first decided to do this. Everything seemed really overwhelming and confusing and I thought there was no way I could do it myself. But if you read through all of the information on this forum and break everything you need to do down into steps and parts, it's much easier to handle. It can be a bit stressful, wondering and worrying if you have all of your stuff correct, but the people here are always willing to answer your questions and try to help you out. =) Lawyers are expensive, and I've read a lot of cases where the lawyer screws things up. So I think you're better off doing it yourself, where you know exactly what you're writing/sending out, and when.

K-1 Timeline:

I paid 2,000 for a lawyer, my now wife came from a high fraud country plus i didn't have the time do the paperwork ,worked too much. Money well spent! Didn't want't any foolish mistakes done on my paper work.

I'll suggest a coupla things, maybe (maybe...) help you to decide whether you need an attorney or not.

a. read the VJ guides. map the steps out on paper and pencil. See if anything doesn't make sense to you.

b. Read the USCIS web portal about the forms. Map out the steps on paper and pencil. See if anything doesn't make sense to you.

c. Practice filling out the forms, at least 5 times. See if anything still doesn't make sense to you.

d. Have any red flags? Practice writing up attestation letters about each red flag.

Now, after doing (with major emphasis on DOING ) all of the above, if you do NOT understand the forms and the process and potential red flags for your petition,

then I'd suggest getting a good IMMIGRATION lawyer. You are concerned with time, I am concerned with your 'knowledge acquisition', as knowledge is power. You can have 'it' good, fast or cheap - pick 2.

Welcome to VJ, btw - this is a GREAT DIY Immigration Web Portal, with emphasis on 'Y', and 'D'.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

If you do decide to use an attorney, may I reccomendd Lawrence Holmes. He is mine and Sveta's (I have problems comprehending legal forms and very little time with my work) and I can say absolutely nothing bad against them. Very professional and they will work out a payment plan if the up front money is an issue.

We paid $950 for our legal help - paying in instalments was an option. Personally I found the help invaluable as all our questions were answered and all our paperwork checked. Never mind what anyone says, I found it helpful. But, of course, its down to personal preference.

We used the same firm for the K1 and the AOS too. All questions answered and paperwork processed without hitches. :)

This is my second rodeo so to speak as I did a K1 in 2008 but broke it off. I hired a lawyer then and man was he a pain. He caused me more work then it was worth. I almost have my packet now assembled. Take your time, read the guides and save your money. I do not like paperwork and I am unorganized BUT I am still doing this little by little. VJ is the best Attorney you can get. You have thousands of experts on here that are kind and will help you.

Good luck

I just read many posts on this topic again. It is VERY overwhelming at first looking and reading VJ. I say give yourself a week or two and just study VJ. As one person gave great advice on mapping it out and filling out sample forms. I took ours an hour a time as I have some Attention Deficit and work many hours. As mentioned before I hired an attorney and he asked for more information than required based on VJ. I spend more hours already obtaining documents for him then what I have in this process so far. And all I am waiting for is my fiancee's 325, letter of intent and photo then I can insert her stuff, double and triple check then send off and let the nerves start lol.. I personally feel better going this route. It means more to me this time which feels good..... If you have extra cash and simply dont want to bother then give an attorney a shot. I personally did not have a good experience all around back in 2008 using attorney.

Good luck one again
