My spouse and I filed i-130 and i-485 in late March. We've already had the biometrics done and, based on other timelines we've seen, are expecting to receive an interview notice for mid-June soon. In about a week we will be moving more than 1000 miles from our current address. We will be moving back to our current address about 3 months after that.

I have read a lot of bad things about paperwork getting lost when interviews are rescheduled at a different office. I also suspect that even if the paperwork is not lost, we may have already moved back before the new interview date in the new city, which would mean we would have to reschedule a second time. Even if that was allowed (I'm not sure if it is), it would cause an even bigger delay and be another chance for lost paperwork.

I've considered updating my address now so maybe we can get our first interview scheduled at the office near our summer address. We would not have a problem receiving any mail there even though we're not living there yet. However, I think the policy says you should not fill out the change of address forms until you've already moved.

We could fly back to have the interview at the original location on the original date, but this would mean missing work and buying expensive plane tickets.

I don't think it's possible to explain our situation to USCIS now and ask them to reschedule the interview to late August at our current office.

As I see it, we really have no good options. Does anyone have any recommendations?

You can always request a reschedule when the appointment letter comes.

You must change the address when you move, that would be a crime not to. I would recommend just changing when you do move, you will get a EAD before the interview. The process might slow down with 2-3 weeks, but you can still be lucky. You should follow the rules, though.

3/23/2012 (Day 0) - I-130, I-485 and I-765 sent
4/02/2012 (Day 11) - Hard Copy of NOA1 in the mail of I-130, I-485 and I-765
4/04/2012 (Day 13) - Received a letter for biometrics appointment for 4/20/2012.
4/20/2012 (Day 29) - Biometrics done
5/03/2012 (Day 42) - Status online changed to interview, scheduled for June 11
5/16/2012 (Day 55) - EAD Card Production, online status update
5/24/2012 (Day 63) - EAD Card in the mail
6/11/2012 (Day 83) - Interview, approved on the spot

05/19/2014 (Day 0) - Mailed I-751

05/27/2014 (Day 8) - Received NOA1

I understand this is the normal way to do it. Ideally we would get another appointment in our new city while we're still living there.

I am just worried by other posts I've seen posts that say it can take 3 months or longer to get the new appointment (in which case we'd have already moved again, further delaying our application), or paperwork is lost during the transfer and applications are denied, or even a second rescheduling is not allowed. Do you think these other poster's experiences are not typical?

I never intended to hide my address change. I am considering having to fly back because I think it is likely the initial interview notice will come before I have to file the address change. It was my understanding an interview is not rescheduled just because you change your address. Is that not correct?

I highly doubt it. There are people at USCIS, you know, they understand that people move, it's life. I think it's just superstition, I've seen plenty of people rescheduling and moving with no problem.

You are allowed to move...but if you are saying that issues arising as a result of moving is superstition - that part is not superstition. People on here have had significant issues arise from moving and having to reschedule. Not all the time and not that this will be the case for the OP but it certainly can and has happened.

If an adjuster has advance parole and an EAD, and there's no 3/10 year entry ban, moving and updating your address just isn't a huge inconvenience, even if does delay the GC by a couple months.

We moved in January. We rescheduled our biometrics for another city, which put us in a new queue for interview (from Milwaukee to Cincinnati). It delayed us 3 weeks for metrics. Everything was still completed within 4 months.

Point is that it has created issues...

I am not even saying he shouldn't do it...just giving info, bud.

One guy got screwed up by several months...yes that is an inconvenience.

Absolutely doesn't mean that's the way it would be for everyone...but the potential is there and he should be aware.

Moving once is normal.

Moving twice is out of the ordinary and it may screw it up a bit. The one guy I am thinking of moved more than once...

This sounds like going to a summer home to me - not "moving".

Which means you will still live at the first address most of the time, correct? That you will still get mail there?

If such is the case, then have someone watch your mailbox. Have them let you know if you get anything from the Service. Then fly back for the interview.

Might cause you to miss some work and buy plane tickets. Cheaper than a cocked-up case though.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

What's so complicated about this? You're going somewhere to work for the summer season.

Filing the change of address for a temporary move seems problematic. More chances for inconvenient scheduling.

You could make an InfoPass appointment at your local USCIS office and discuss the options.

Thanks for the reply. I feel like people with horror stories will always post them, but maybe most reschedules are that easy and we never hear about it!

Our names will still be on the original lease for the summer, but we will be getting a new apartment when we move back. Even so, I think it's quite disingenuous to say we're not actually moving. AR-11 implies it should be filled out, even for temporary moves: "(If the above address is temporary) I expect to remain there.... years.... months"

As far as infopass goes, I have seen a lot of people asking about rescheduling during it, but only one person who actually did it, and that didn't work. I see there are some appointments available, so even though it's a four hour trip for me I'll consider it.

This is very possible. As long as you are aware of what 'can' happen and are prepared for a potential delay I would go ahead and make whatever decision is best for you guys.

If it is über important for you guys to have a streamlined process with no delays than obviously one nigh not want to take the risk of screwing with the timeline.

Best of luck with it.
