Trying to figure out how the lyrics of "I'm Sexy and I Know It" would cause outrage amongst feminists. I just asked the Hawt American for his opinion, and he asked me by way of reply, "Are there people on your forum who would die on that hill?"

Good question! I hope members with more identification with feminism on here will jump in to offer their take on all this. How do YOU view this issue? (genuinely interested!)

That was not the 'double standard' I thought you were referring to. Comparing the situation of the 6 year-old to rappers using offensive language is like comparing apples and oranges. While they may be related issues, they are far from comparable for a number of reasons.

Such as?

Why is one acceptable and the other not acceptable?

She would like us to believe SHE is identified with feminism, but she does not care if women are trashed and humiliated in music.

My point exactly, they are not interested in women, they are interested in using women as an excuse for a different agenda. What would really be interesting is to know what THAT is.

I believe that it is the supposed sexual harassment that is the issue with the 6 year-old. He apparently focused his 'offensive' comments on a specific individual. If he were to randomly utter the same offensive words that rappers like to use the appropriate response would be to make him understand that it is unpleasant and unwanted. Maybe give him some 'time-out'. When you think about it, isn't that pretty much what Don Imus got?

I'm impressed that you know my feelings about the intersections between feminism and popular music! Were you sitting in a nearby booth last week while I discussed this with a friend over a few choice ales? We weren't speaking of rap and hip hop, but about indie rock. It was a spirited debate!

Please point out the specific lyrics that you find denigrate women in that song. Analysis of your complaint would be easier with such information.

Non answer and purposeful ignorance of the subject. Typical dodge

I never metioned the song, I mentioned the genre of music and how it is tolerated by women. Please show me where women's groups organize against such repulsive references to women as are common in that type of music.

Women's groups organized boycotts of Limbaugh for daring to call a woman a "#######" Where have they done the same for music which refers to women in far more vulgar terms? You had posts ad nauseum regarding Limbaugh, show me one of your posts that does anything but dodge the subject of repulsive denegration of women in music. One post. One opinion.

Sure. Show me a post. You had plenty to say when Limgaugh said "#######"

And just last week I was sitting in a booth discussing how I am so totally going to contribute money to Planned Parenthood since they are losing their funding in many states. Yeah really.

The genre? as in Electro House music? Half the time such music doesn't even have lyrics.

While one may question the intelligence of suspending a 6 year old, it is notable that the lyrics of the song, and of other songs of the genre themselves go unchallenged by women's organizations.

Is this not a critique of the song lyrics? My comment wasn't a dodge, but a genuine question. I won't ask it again because you won't bother to answer it.

I don't have posts on here about the intersection of popular music and feminism bar the ones posted in this topic. Unlike some on here, I don't feel the need to have a brain dump about all topics that interest me or are tangentially related to my life. Does the absence of such posts mean I'm not interested in this? I've been listening to a lot of Joy Division lately -- does the absence of many, many posts on how much I love Joy Division mean I don't like them? Huh.

My posts about Limbaugh had to do with determining whether or not his Arbitron ratings would rise after the Fluke incident. I don't recall if I wrote more about it, but I could be wrong.star_smile.gif

I'm out and about right now without the ability to provide tons of links (this is not a dodge, but the reality of life) about feminist critiques of rap music. It's been a discussion that's been ongoing for 20+ years, so I'm surprised this is new to you. I'll ask my friend who's a professor at a college back east, and who specializes in this very area, for some useful background reading.

Great about the donation to PP! I made a donation myself.

Please highlight the lyrics in this song that are offensive to women, or more offensive than the typical Why_Me post

Also, get back to me when major political candidates start a dialogue with LMFAO, or have to apologize when they take issue with criticism of Paul Ryan's budget

"Sexy And I Know It"

Yeah, yeah

When I walk on by, girls be looking like damn he fly

I pimp to the beat, walking on the street in my new lafreak, yeah

This is how I roll, animal print, pants outta control,

It's Redfoo with the big afro

And like Bruce Lee yeah I got the glow

[a reference to the 80's martial arts classic "The Last Dragon", where martial artists, having attained master status, start to glow when practicing their moves, and also get some special powers.]

Ah... Girl look at that body [x3]

Ah... I work out

Ah... Girl look at that body [x3]

Ah... I work out

When I walk in the spot (yeah), this is what I see (ok)

Everybody stops and they staring at me

I got a passion in my pants and I ain't afraid to show it, show it, show it, show it

I'm sexy and I know it [x2]

Yeah

When I'm at the mall, security just can't fight them off

And when I'm at the beach, I'm in a Speedo trying to tan my cheeks (what)

This is how I roll, come on ladies it's time to go

We headed to the bar, baby don't be nervous

No shoes, no shirt, and I still get serviced (watch)

Ah... Girl look at that body [x3]

Ah... I work out

Ah... Girl look at that body [x3]

I work out

When I walk in the spot (yeah), this is what I see (ok)

Everybody stops and they staring at me

I got passion in my pants and I ain't afraid to show it, show it, show it, show it

I'm sexy and I know it [x2]

I'm sexy and I know it...

Check it out [x2]

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle yeah [x3]

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle yeah, yeah

Do the wiggle man

I do the wiggle man

Yeah

I'm sexy and I know it

Ah... Girl look at that body [x3]

Ah... I work out

Ah... Girl look at that body [x3]

Ah... I work out

Yeah I'm sexy and I know it!

Non answer number 2. The next woman OK with denigrating women. I am so surprised. How do you feel about the denigration of women in music, do you really think it does not exist? Do you really believe it is OK?
