Comprehensive SSN Guide.

I know there is a SSN VJ guide that gives all the links etc to the paperwork you need to fill out etc, but I was wondering if there is an actual home, as it were, for a SSN topic? I had to do various and multiple searches to find out information on it, and it required reading a lot in order to find some consistency in what people offered as advice or their experiences. I think when people have issues with this it's because they are unaware that there are inconsistencies in the Social Security system itself. I just think that a page that offered a comprehensive guide on what people might experience, and what they can do to avoid that or overcome it would be really useful (like actual working links to info that states that a person on a i-94 visa is entitled) -- it seems like a topic that comes up a lot!!!

How would I go about putting that together? And could we have a few people collaborate to ensure we exhaust all the most popular issues people face when trying to get theirs?

Thanks!

Click on "Guides" in the menu bar. Then look in the right column for the SSN guide. That's where I learned how. You have to scroll down some to find the K1 part once you click the link on the guide page.

The forum where I learned all the problems people have with various weird things SSA workers tell them is Working & Traveling During US Immigration That's where all things SSN used to get moved.

The member who knows the most about SSA is called "I Quit".

i smell a wiki entry in the near future.

or maybe an external page elsewhere ;)

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I think what's needed is a comprehensive guide in one place that is easily identifiable and accessible to people when they are searching. Thanks for the info :thumbs:

I checked out the guide and it's the one I knew existed and actually used myself. I am thinking that creating an SSN guide for Dummies is what would be most useful and consistent and all in one place.

Kinda like the socialsecurity.gov site? Sounds like you're going to recreate the wheel.

Why not build your guide in the VJ wiki? That's what it's for.

Best of luck.

What else do you need to know that's not in the guide?

This is just a rough idea of what I have been thinking about as I have not put anything concrete together yet, but things like:

In some states/offices you may find that you are told that you are not entitled to an SSN as a K1 visa holder and be turned away. I would like to give links to the official information I took with me on my second visit, after being denied a SSN the first time due to erroneous errors on that office's part, and give people the information they may need should that happen. That way people can feel more empowered, and if we teach those offices how to do their jobs maybe that will help others who come after us. There are a lot of inconsistencies and I would just like to provide people with the confidence that they need in those situations.

Does that make sense to you? And, can you see where I am going?

That site sucks, don't ya think! They give out inconsistent and contradictory information. Do I need permission to start a wiki on here. I did contact Captain Ewok, and I am awaiting his response. I certainly don't want to reinvent the wheel, but perhaps just straighten out the kinks a little :lol:, especially for people here on K1 visa's.

The most encountered issues all in one place, with information on how to deal with those situations. VJ has a lot of the answers on other posts, but it's a real headache trying to sift through posts and find relevant and reliable info.

for your research, use the advanced search tool a bit.

here's a starter.

search term -> 'ssn'

member name -> 'Darnell'

click on -> show as posts

but that only gets you stuff from this year forward. a google site search to show my stuff: [upper right search thingie with the word 'Google' in it]

CBP SSN Darnell

I think you've got a good point, Vicky. The SSN section is currently in the Working and Traveling forum. I think there is enough SSN discussion to qualify for its own sub-forum with a pinned topic or two. Do I see your hand up to volunteer for the job? :lol:

Will link this thread to the mod forum for discussion with Ewok.
