Like others here I won't discount a qualified immigration lawyer as a valuable asset in certain cases.

But it's my sincere belief that anyone with a straightforward case and fair understanding of government and the English language can save thousands of dollars by doing this (relatively) straightforward process by themselves, especially with the help of VJ.

There are good, competent lawyers out there though, and some cases really are far beyond DIY.

'Oksana & Max'~

This is why VJ is against lawyers. As they only collect the money and you are the one end up doing all the work.

:ot:

With any due respect to you.. I disagree...This is not a correct statement.

VJ, (bearing in mind we BOTH are not VJ spokes people)is not against lawyers.

I feel too, what most people have found (your company included) is VJ is such a valuable site that persons without a law degrees could figure their way through a simple case....thanks to VJ.

But I have not seen on here anyone advocating that VJ is against them.

Put it this way my uncle used a lawyer paid a lot of money and had trouble in his case which took way longer than it should of. I didn't get a lawyer did everything on my own with the help of VJ and had no problems except one RFE due to my stupid mistake but still finished faster than my uncle did.

:) isnt it a lawyer is the one to helps you check the papers u submitted to nvc,and tells u what to do next...bla bla bla..huh im very much disappointed for choosing such kind of lawyer,..he do not deserves to be paid because ,instead of instructing us what to do,we are the one doing it to him..actually he told my hubby that he is so thankful coz he learned many things from him. shame on him....he'told us that he has no right/control to verify my visa???..isnt it this is part of his work....but why the others??

just a piece of advise to all my co-vjers...if u need help,...choose a very smart lawyer to help u in your journey ..  dont choose a lawyer who doesnt even know how to communicate with usem..

I see all the people bashing lawyers, but I do have to caution painting all with the same brush, or at least disagree. Our lawyer simply had us fill out a form, then she did all the paperwork, and has given us a bunch of advice. We already had forms filled out from the first time filing, and she didn't want to look them over, she wanted to do them completely from scratch. She has been very helpful. I"m sorry you got a dud :( I would advise anyone who needs a lawyer to investigate carefully everything you can about the person because we found some duds with obvious warning signs just using the Internet, before choosing the one we chose.

Def don't need a lawyer for immigration. I did everything myself. I had a friend from this forum who got screwed by her lawyer and made her process longer.

Currently.... they have issued Ice the incorrect GC and we have tried 4 times to fix it. First time they had us send it to the incorrect address. Second time they said we used an expired form, which was the form they gave us. Third time was "oh sorry we lost the last page, can you send it again?." Fourth time is the gov is shut down. Will this ever be corrected in time for Ice to get the permanent GC? Stay tuned to find out. T_T

Hi to all

i am also victim of that kind of stupid lawyer in USA. Although i hired him when i read his profile and specially bcos he is originally from India so i guess he might have more exp how Mumbai embassy handle this kind of case but he wasted my 5 months just to gather all the information and documents from me. i paid him all fees in advance as per contract. i also hired him with that thought that i dnt have worry to miss any documents and it will be acurate but i got all the information from this website. i am really thankfull to all vj members. i arugued with him that we dnt have to send form i-864EZ with form i-129f but still he did.

he really doesn't deserve to be lawyer at all who doesnt know how to handle client's needs who are waiting so hard to be with their lover ones. i am waiting for last 6 years and i hope this year i will be with him.

i am at the stage to wiat for NOA2. its been already 1 month and 1 week.

Good luck to everyone!!

Thanks for reading this message.

We opted to go with a lawyer, even though we think we have a pretty straight forward case. So far, our lawyer has been pretty easy to deal with, and I don't feel as if he's wasted our time or money. From the moment we hired him, he explained what the process would be like, emailed us all the documents that needed to be signed and filled in, double checked them with us, and sent them out the day after he received them completed from us. He also found someone who could translate my birth certificate, and all I had to do was send him a scan of my original one. I can't complain as he's been efficient and answers all questions in a timely manner.

As my fiance and I both work long hours during the week, it's kinda nice to know that someone is helping us make the process as easy as possible.

I guess it all depends on how much you both have to invest into getting all the paper work done properly and understanding what needs to be done.

I'm sure many couples have been successful in completing the process without a lawyer, however I guess I'm in the minority who went ahead and hired a lawyer, hoping that it's facilitate things!!!

Using a lawyer got me an RFE. I was working 2 jobs and I didn't want to mess up the petition. I found this site a week later. I only hired him for the petition. He had the nerve to tell me the RFE wasn't included in the price. I ended up doing it myself. Live and learn.

that must be really frustrating! im really sorry to hear that..

each lawyer has their specialities, so u need to choose wisely...

most of couples who file for immigrant visa do not use lawyers. i got so much info from VJ and im glad my sister told me about this site =)

hope everything goes well with your case!! good luck!
