When a potential employer does a background check on your as an imigrant, what data will come up?

My fiance told me that its usually done using the social security number but once i have mine it will just say i have been in the country for a small amount of time. do they you anything from the visa application thats accessed.

For example how does a US employer check back my criminal record, employment history and qualifications?

Some companies will actually run a check for your qualifications in your home country. My company engaged a 3rd party to do just that, they verified I have the degree that I claim to have and made an assessment of whether my qualifications is equivalent to the US qualifications. It was fairly easy, all I had to do was sign a consent form.

Just to echo what others have said - employers will often look into your history in other countries. When I was applying for the job I've been offered, I had to complete a form showing my addresses over the last 7 years (which was a bit of a pain as I've moved at least every year!) and provide information on my degrees.

I guess it depends on what kind of job you're applying for. I do the hiring at my job, all our employees have to have criminal background checks run. Those background checks only cover the US. We do our background checks via livescan (fingerprints).

As for references, I've hired A LOT of immigrants and we don't check references outside the US. If someone has only worked in their home country, we just go to their personal references instead. If they can't provide any of those, then we have a problem. A lot of people just come in with translated reference letters from their previous employers. That's always nice to see.

Honestly, very few employers will respond to reference checks these days out of fear of getting sued. I'm not too worried about it if I'm unable to check employment references.

This type of verification mostly involved in white collar job.
