I guess we should suspend laws that state that children under 14 should not be allowed to drive a car, work as chimney sweeps or become prostitutes. FREEEEEDOM!!!!!!

Kids can drive at 14 in some states.... It's called a hardship license..

Also if a 14 year old has the maturity to be a chimney sweep/prostitute, why not let them? Who are you to dictate they cannot?

I think we have adequate laws to protect children already and clearly the woman in this case has been CHARGED WITH A CRIME, what more do we need to do? You want her charged with a different crime?

I doubt she would be CHARGED WITH A CRIME if she had been having her child use the tanning bed appropriately, in the same way no parent would be CHARGED WITH A CRIME if they let their child have a drink of wine with dinner.

That there is a law against tanning beds for children is neither here nor there

so we are supposed to sit back and let parents do what they want with their children? this 5 year old child suffered serious burns from being taken into the tanning booth.

How is that any of your business what she does with her child?

MAY 1--A New Jersey woman has been charged with felony child endangerment after she allegedly took her five-year-old daughter into a tanning booth, where the child suffered serious burns.

Patricia Krentcil, 44, was hit yesterday with a felony count approved by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. She was arrested last week by the Nutley Township Police Department.

The investigation of Krentcil began after cops were summoned to the elementary school attended by the kindergartener, who was in pain due to what appeared to be a severe sunburn. The subsequent probe determined, cops allege, that Krentcil took her child into a tanning booth at a Nutley parlor a week prior to her April 24 arrest.

State law bars children under the age of 14 from using a tanning facility. Investigators contend that Krentcil brought her daughter into a stand-up tanning booth without the knowledge of parlor employees.

Pictured in the above mug shot (click to enlarge), Krentcil was freed from the Essex County jail after posting $25,000 bail

What are you posting about? She was charged with child endangerment, so why are you outraged that children aren't allowed to use tanning parlor businesses?

Feel free to go back and read from the beginning.

I have - do think forbidding children to use a service with significant health hazards where they could be badly burned is a bad thing?

I think it is a bad thing for the government to do so by the use of imprisonment absent harm to children, YES.

We cannot ban the use of every service or activity that could possibly injure a child. We have laws to protect children from negligence and endangerment. The parent in this case is being punished, or will be. You want her punished for something else? Or do you want people that did not harm their children punished?

Is anyone asking she be punished for anything other than child endangerment? There is no evidence in this thread, merely concern for the child there is also no evidence that someone who happens to have a tanning bed at home who allows their children to use it is being punished, or that anyone is being unduly oppressed by the regulation.

The only reason the law was brought up in the original article is because the mother snuck her child into the tanning salon without the knowledge of the employees.

What we have is an apples to oranges faux outrage from the OP comparing laws regarding abortions for adult women versus regulations placed on a legal business prohibiting children from using it, much like bars and tattoo parlors.

The OP implies it is wrong for the government to regulate tanning beds and NOT regulate abortion.

He has a point. I agree.

The government should not regulate tanning beds either. THAT was my original response and it reamins the same. You seem to agree. I think.
