Hi all,

I'm so glad I found this Community. Great job guys!

At first I have to excuse for my bad english, but I hope you guys understand my babbling ;)

This is my problem:

I (m/29/german) want to go to the US for 6 months with a tourist visa for loosing a serious amount of weight (or even get a good startboost doing this).

I know, it sounds strange but I need to break out of my highly stressfull daily routine here in Germany. 90 days on VWP wouldn't be enough.

My employer has the same opinion and would support me on every way he can cause I'm kind of special qualified for the work I'm doing for over 10 years now and he is highly interessed in my future healthiness (unfortunatly we are talking about 180kg on 1,90m :/ ).

He would allow me a paid (a little less than my actual income but surely enough to make a life) vacation for 6 months to get "my #### together".

I also have an invitation from good friends in the US who would allow me to stay in there house for that time, more or less for free.

Do you think I have a chance to get a B2 Visa with that initial position?

My employer would write a conclusive statement for the consulate that he is offering me that "paid" vacation and that he's expecting me back after 6 months.

Also the rental agreement for my appartment and of course the appartment itself here in germany would continue to exist. Do you think these are strong enough ties?

I also have a valid VWP from a vacation last year (march). Will this become invalid when the visa got denied, or am I at least able to go over for the 90 days when it's denied?

Thanks in advance!

Mike

Would something like this program be helpful as well? >> http://www.dukehealth.org/services/diet_and_fitness/about

You want to check to see what impact applying for the visitor visa will have on future use of the VWP. Other members will add their knowledge about this.

Hey Mike,

Please excuse Noah. Please understand that the majority of people in the United States are not like him. Most of us would be more than happy to have you come here for 90 days or 6 months to accomplish your goal of losing weight.

I can't speak too much about your situation because I'm not an expert on these matters. I just wanted to apologize for the way Noah responded to you. It's embarrases me when people from my country treat foreigners the way that Noah does.

Moderator hat off . . .

The stronger you can build your case and provide evidence to support your request, the more likely it will be for you to get the visa. The letter of support from your boss, along with the indications for your ongoing salary, plus an expected date of return to work is definitely a positive factor. Having a weight-loss plan in place, such as a structured programme offered by an accredited organization, will also help your cause. If you are planning for any sort of surgery, make sure you can show that you are both a candidate for the surgery (copies of correspondence with doctors/clinics/hospitals,e tc.) as well as proving you can afford to pay for the surgery.

It is easy in the US with the focus on poor nutrition, large food portions and lack of exercise for people to gain weight rather than lose it, so you should be able to show why coming to the US is necessary for your weight loss plan to succeed.

Good luck both with the weight loss and the visa request.

I would have thought the US would be the very last place to go, is there anywhere fatter?

Thanks for all your great replys! I can understand your doubts about going to the US for losing weight. Sounds like a oxymoron ;)

But I easily managed to live fat and unhealthy in Germany for about 29 years now. You're able to live that way in any "firstworld-country". On the other side, you also can live healthy in every "firstworld-country", too! Even in the USA. It's about you (me in this case), not about the country you are living in. And to get me on that track I definitively need a change of pace!

So why necessarily the USA?

Cause I have some real good friends over there who would help me with my plan. That's way easier as going to another place completely alone.

And of course the fact that they would let me live in there "vacation condo(?)" almost for free is a big factor cause I have to continue to pay the rent for my appartment here in Germany, too.

I think I'll give it a try, just praying that a denial would still let me the chance to go for 90 Days on VWP!

Good luck, BB!!

As for the "why USA" talk, my 2 cents: "going to the USA" is like saying "going to Europe"-> there are so many different regions with different cultures and attitudes. The USA is an extremely health-conscious, outdoorsy place in some areas: Colorado, California, Austin Texas, Portland Oregon, Moab Utah, etc, etc, etc....

of course, if the vacation condo is in Jackson, Mississippi... well... :D

Again, good luck!!

While the US has without a doubt enormous amount of obese people, at the same time its fitness "industry" and amount of opportunities to work out and keep you self healthy is unmatched by any other country in the world (haven't been everywhere but can risk this opinion). Eating healthy here is also much easier than anywhere else... And there is lots of very fit people... Look at bright sides of this country - that's what I see everyday. His case has perfect sense for me.

Agreed 100%.

One thing I notice in Europe is how fat and unhealthy people here seem to think all Americans are.

I have never eaten healthier, worked out as much, and with such ease as I did in the US.

Is it even necessary to mention weight loss as a reason for coming to the US? Couldn't you just get a tourist visa to visit without the mention of weight loss? I have to agree with other posters that this is arguably the #1 FAT country in the western world. I understand your reasons for wanting to come here as you have people here to help with accommodation and other expenses so why not just call it a holiday to visit with friends? Sounds like you are able to get all the necessary documentation to prove you will return. I don't see the need to mention weight loss as a reason as it does indeed sound like (as the OP said himself) an oxymoron. The OP might have more luck getting the visa without the mention of weight loss for a reason to visit here.

Just sayin'
