Hi Guys,

To all who got their SSN in Utah state did you guys married first before getting your SSN without any issues or get SSN first before getting married? Im going to get married June 9 and my I-194 expires on July. I wanted to get SSN after getting married but i dunno if that will have an issue or something. I need advice to those who got their SSN in Utah state.

SSN is a federal issue, nothing to do with the state where one is located. When you get your SSN is entirely up to you -- however, you won't be issued a SSN if you're within two weeks of the I-94 expiration. The sooner you get it, the sooner you can start to move forward with other matters, e.g., getting a state ID.

You might be cutting it close if you run into any issues getting your SSN. Get it before the wedding and do a name change for it after. Having the SSN is important in so many ways. If you fail to get it in time, you're really going to regret it while you wait to adjust status. There is really no rush to change the name on it afterwards either, just having the number is the important thing.

Get the SSN right away. Like has been said, if you wait too long, you will have to wait until she gets her EAD in hand. You will probably need that anyways, to do the name change with the SSA after you are married. Once she has her green card in hand, then you can remove the conditions on her SS card.

You can only get a SSN while you have a valid immigration status in the USA. The I-94 gives you valid status for 90 days, but if you apply too close to the end, it will not be issued because it takes time to check your status then give the ss number. They also have to issue the number before your status runs out. Once you apply for the AOS, you still do not have a valid immigration status. You're in the grey area of waiting to be issued a valid immigration status. That is why it is called Adjustment of Status, its taking you from no status to legal resident status.

We got married a month after arrival. We waited until after marriage so we don't have to go back for name change. She can't work until after she files for AOS get's either the green card or early work permit, so I don't understand the big rush. We have the early work permit and should get Green Card any day.. Of course if you want to get it right away that's ok also.

I know early work permit and green card are not official names, just saying before you Johny googles get started.

One of the main reasons to get a SSN right away is so that the immigrant can be added to medical insurance, be added to any bank accounts, and when you do receive the EAD (work permit), you can apply for work without delay. Also, the SSN number is often required for civil marriages, so YMMV.

Social security offices are about the worst trained you are going to encounter. Ours was so bad we ended up waiting until after she got her green card, and even then they tried to stop us. We waited a whole three weeks after she got here to apply. Gosh, not much more than a year later she finally got one.

I went thru the we need your SSN for insurance thing, or so HR said. I maid them call the insurance company. It is against the law to refuse to provide insurance coverage to an otherwise covered employee becuse of a lack of SSN. We added her no problem after I explained that.

As for you can't get married without a SSN in some places. They may ask for but they can not require it by law. If you explain you do not have one they may ask you to sign an affidavit saying you don't have one. You don't even need one to file a joint income tax return.

I

If asked any agency public or private is required by law to furnish you in writing if it is a requirement or a request.

Once gain no problem getting it right away It's a personal preference. I just did not want to make two trips to the SSO.
