So my Girlfriend is here on a tourist visa right now, and she wants to find work in the US. Everyone says they see tons of people that aren't American working everywhere hired everywhere but all I have found that is legal is the H1B, and that takes 2 months of filing and is expensive. She's got a BA and she's Canadian. So I am just worried it will be hard for her to find work here. Is there another type of visa? I just want the best possible situation where she can stay in America until i finish my M.Ed. Literally if I could get a temporary work permit that said she can work for a year then life would be pefect...but I'm guessing they don't have that.

You and I both wish. And I am sure many many other people feel the same. There is no way of working in the US legally and without jeopardizing your future ability to work/stay/get a green card/citizenship without following the legal channels. H1B is your only option and they are difficult to receive.

I would not risk it. My fiance is back in his home country and I am back in the US for 5 months to work and see family. He would be here in a heart beat if he could work on his tourist visa-but we are not going to risk it just for a crappy under the table job that would ruin a future life in the US.

Sorry. I wish it was different as well.

Sorry, no temperorary work permits

A TN might work, if she obtains skilled labour in a profession that is in need and on the TN 'list"

A J-1 also might work

Time to start researching your options

PS - Canadians don't usually need tourist visas to go to the US, are you sure she has one and not simply travling on her passport? Be sure she leaves when she is required to
