Hi ladies (and gentlemen),

Wanted to pop in here and see if any of you are currently in Egypt. I'd like to plan a trip, but it seems a little nuts there right now. Opinions?

Thanks, all!

Passing harsh judgment on those you don't know says nothing of the judged and everything of the judge.

I'm heading to Egypt in early June....It's a bit crazy right now but I still feel safe enough to travel. I also plan on going out as little as possible to avoid the heat and potential problems of the elections. Good luck !

I guess we have differing opinions about what constitutes "bad." I liken living here to living in Detroit - complete with drugs and violence and obvious lack of police protection and other basic services.

Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not happening.

There's a shell of a government and government services are next to nothing. The constant - 24/7 - construction of apartments, illegal construction, up to 20 stories high, is a visible reminder of that. So are the pervasive trash in the street and packs of wild dogs running about. Watching television news is outright horrific: guns, drugs, kidnappings, car jackings, armed robberies, people killing each other over a canister of cooking gas, the list goes on. To believe there's "nothing going on" is either naive or ill-informed and to say there's "nothing going on" does a tremendous disservice.

As for travel plans, my advice would be to wait until after the first of July, if and when the transition of power takes place. Even then, it's hard to predict what will happen, so have an exit strategy.

I'm not misinformed I know about all that but it's not where my husband lives. No 20 story buildings here.I'm not here to argue about it.But He don't live in Cairo. So where he is at it's okay.DOGS I AGREE I never seen so many dogs running around and trash also.I'm not saying all that isn't happening.I am telling them about my husbands city.Been here 3 months and been even out at 2 3 4 5 am seen nothing disturbing.

I second that  on all counts, it's not any worse than before..I've been here since last June, I go out on my own everyday, we go out at all hours of the night walking and there's been no problems. And I agree with you that neither of us are misinformed or naive women. I feel as long as you are always aware of your surroundings and don't put yourself into situations or locations you don't belong in,it is fine. Everyone has their own opinion of what constitutes "personal safety" and what they are comfortable with, however many of the things that were previously pointed out are not "new" problems.

IHQ, if I recall correctly, you LIVE in Egypt, no? You've been there for years now, correct? Which as many of us know, a 3+ month vacation does not make you a resident, it makes it an extended vacation. Your point of reference is from living there over the duration of years, not a few visits for a few months here and there.

As I always say, until you're paying utility bills, a year's worth of rent, and have filled out the change of address form with USPS, you are just a visitor. The problems one is exposed to on vacation are different than when you live there. They just are.
