specially in cities like Puebla.. you buy the 'pan de muerto' which is a tasty bread, and then buy the sugar skulls..

my mom makes an altar with the pic of my gramps.. its the basic dia de muertos altar.. the pic.. pan de muerto, something he really liked from this world (food, liquor, etc) and sempazuchitl flowers all around.. oh and a sugar skull (calaverita de azucar)

this month is special in the US for latinos, is the hispanic month.. monday was dia de la raza.. was there any special celebration in ur cities bout the hispanic month?

Interesting topic... I'll have to clarify with the wife what Ecuador does during this time. I know at Christmas the little baby Jesus isnt in the manger until stroke of midnight Dec24/25 00:00:01. And New Years is all about the dolls and candles...

Here at the apartment, last year we had a lot of candy to give away (Sara was lookin forward to handing it out.. after going thru for what she wanted of course ) but since its apartments with no soliciting signs everywhere.. we only had 2 children show... they made out like bandits!

I love hot frothy Mexican chocolate. Javier just mentioned it the other day when we went grocery shopping. It's so much better than our hot chocolate. We also had arroz con leche and some other stuff kinda like it that's made from peanuts. I can't remember what it was called. And tamales, we had tamales coming out our ears. Everytime we went to Javier's abuelita's house she wanted to feed us tamales, even for breakfast.

I love hot frothy Mexican chocolate. Javier just mentioned it the other day when we went grocery shopping. It's so much better than our hot chocolate. Yeah, I like them now but at the time I swore I'd never eat another one. Poor thing she just wanted to make sure we were feed. I even helped make them which was a trip. I've tried to make them here since then but they didn't turn out too well. I guess I need more practice.

Mine were okay, just a little dry. We made them with some kind of leaves in Mexico. Here all I could find was the corn husks. I think that was the big difference. I'll definitely have to try again sometime. I keep asking Javier what kind of food we are going to have at Christmas down there. He said they don't have any specific to fix at that time. But he did say, no tamales. I was awfully disappointed.

Do you have any idea what I may get to eat at Christmas down there? It sounds like the only thing I'm looking forward to is the food.
