I'm curious, do I new to call DOS/NVC every so often to find out about an interview date, or do they send out the email as soon as one is scheduled? Based on everyone's experiences...

There's no need to call whatsoever during this process. Once an interview date is scheduled, they'll email you. It will be a few hours delayed though. That's why calling is suggested if you want to find out right away.

For me, I called Friday right after lunch and got my date. I only got the email about 15 hours later, around 6am Saturday morning.

Yeah, it all depends on who they wanted you to put. If it was the bank holder's name, then the payment will probably get rejected. NVC might tell you to just sit and wait for the payment to process and see what happens.
