This is some exotic species of ginger... can't remember right now which one. The blooms look like something out of a prehistoric rain forest. It wants a lot of water, so I keep it in a pot.

Another thing I keep in a pot is this Texas Ruby Red grapefruit tree. It would not survive a very hard freeze, which we sometimes get even here in San Antonio. It's got some little baby grapefruits on it.

The chillax zone. (See my new bamboo rug, Julianna ? Could not find suitable yoga mats but found this for $20 at Garden Ridge Pottery. One day I will get around to staining those chairs...)

Awwww you can do it - don't give up. Just get something impossible to kill like a zamioculcas ("ZZ plant") or a sansivieria (snake plant or as my grandmother used to call it, "mother-in-law's tongue.") Then ignore them - they will flourish !

Also, want to add that I have darling neighbors! They grow all kinds of veges in their backyard. They have given Adam & I tomatoes (sugar babies I think they called the little sweet ones) and reg big ones, sweet onions, cucumbers, green peppers, squash, corn, mint, & limes. I have tomatoes & onions that Im going to make a Summer Garden pie with & heres the recipe:

http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/summer-garden-pie-10000000331964/

Im thinking about putting spinach & mushrooms in it instead of bacon since we aren't bacon lovers around here.

Sounds tasty with the spinach & mushrooms. That reminds me of a recipe I have that I need to dig up.... for "onion pie"....

Awesome, WOM! So nice looking :) The rug works great too in that space. What color will you stain the chairs?

Just a natural cedar color. I was thinking about an antique-y green... but decided to go with the nat ced instead

Its exciting how many different ways to make vegetables into something totally different. My neighbor made that pie & I told her I'd google the recipe & make it this week. She also made homemade salsa all from veges from her garden. That salsa is fantastic! Way better than I've ever eaten anywhere else actually. I can totally taste a difference from the veges in her yard vs buying them from a regular grocery store. There is a big difference!

Fresh from the garden is the way to go  I know you can do tomatoes if you try, and they are soooo worth it :)

Anyone ever grow succulents ? I never really tried, except for a few gift cacti & things. Some lasted on the windowsill, some did not. But now I want to try.

I am trying six different tomatoes this year. I'm still probably a month and a half from having any ready to eat though. Last year I was able to use tomatoes from our garden for a few pots of harira, but Ramadan might be a bit too early for that this year.

WOM

the ginger plant is beautiful!!!

I have succulents everywhere

most have been pinched from another persons plant and simply replanted.

For me it is a cheat plant...They bring greenery, variety and fill spaces with literally no care needed. I walk to one and break of a piece when it is too big and walk to another spot and put it in the dirt to fill that space. done.

oo I love cacti and succulents! I collected them for years. I've mostly narrowed to epiphytic cacti now though, but I've had them all.

I think I am going to give it a try in pots... have been considering creating a wild n crazy succulent bed (eventually and if my potted ones do well) in a small but prominent corner of my yard that gets no shade at all....

Are you going to order them or buy locally?

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.
