Oh no about the murder sad.png

Your noid-- I think it's Sphagneticola trilobata because of the leaves. Do you think so?

I don't have any practical experience with the black iris. I was just alking about it the other day with Ammar though. Are you thinking to try to grow it?

He is so bad... every day he is out there killing.... I am amazed there are any geckos left....

A Sphagneticola trilobata ??? :o Oh dear. This is very bad news. It's in a little bed by itself, contained by a rock wall... but maybe I better get rid of it.

The black iris has transfixed my attention. I am not sure they are even cultivatable here. I have tried to search them online, but it seems the plants are not available commercially. Just wondering if you ever had gone and dug up a wild one to transplant....

No, I haven't. i don't know that I would. Apparently they are having lots of problems in their ative habitats because of development, tourism, and locals mostly trashing them like crazy :/ Same with a lot of other plants as well. I am always smh when I hear this girl I know talk about how she and her husband (local) always go out and off-road all through Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea/Petra areas. That trashes so much. And they aren't unique :( What I wish is that people there would get a handle on the value of what they have and then not only work to conserve it, but also possible propegate things-- like how we have the native plant projects, nurseries, etc. I think they could have something going for sure. Even better if they learned to use native and drought tolerant plants in their tourist sites. So much water wasting and destruction comes from their current plans. Then, if they did what *I* think they should do (LOL) we could buy our very own black iris :)

Our tiny murderers are just tiny marshmallows who stay in and mostly lay around. So I don't have that problem. :)

It is a very striking flower - it really looks like an improved cultivar. This is why I am surprised if no one has propagated them for commercial sale - it seems it would be very popular, especially if it can naturalize in other maybe not identical but compatible environments.

Is it illegal to remove it? For some reason that is dancing around in my head, but I may be thinking about something else. I wish they had the foresight to see what great and awesome things they have.. and the $$ we would pay lol.

I don't know - maybe ? I haven't seen any pictures of them in what appear to be gardens, only in what appear to be wild settings.

That could also be because of the lack of flower gardening as a traditional garden type. There is a book written by some British guy on gardening in that area. I think it's on Amazon. It may have something on that. I was thinkign to try to borrow it at some point to see if it was worth buying.

Iris atrofusca ~ Jal'ad Iris

Iris atrofusca ~ Jal'ad Iris

سوسن جلعاد - كحيلة الكلب

Family: IRIDACEAE

Perennial, 30-40 cm in height, growing often in semi-rounded tufts about 0.5 m in diameter

Leaves: 1.2-2 cm in width, as long as the stalk of the flower, usually covered by a waxy greyish material, giving a dull look to the leaves

Flowers: 10-15 cm in diameter, dark lilac

Flowering: March-April

Habitat: Low hills overlooking Jordan Valley, Wadi as-Sair, As Shbaihi and Jal'ad

Note: The Jal'ad Iris is one of the dark coloured irises that people often call "black iris. It is a rare species, and needs to be protected.

If you see it growing in the wild, do not pick it!

Check for more pictures in the photo gallery below.

That's it! Lovely! I feel like it would be prudent if they dealt with it like we're dealing with the native ladyslippers.

I am still just astounded that this does not seem to be in commercial cultivation - it is really a stunning flower.

I wonder if this is something that could be accomplished with the right connections-- to suggest it and get permission to take a few then begin to propegate?
