Julianna the leaves ARE open right??...so should i leave it??? It is not like I cant go to the store to get artichoke  ...just wanted to have one grown in my home and steam it....but from what you write it is too late?

Just cut it now and try it. When they start to open the choke is maturing (the petals) so that's the main issue besides toughness/sweetness. I'd just try it anyway.

I love the artichoke, inluvn !

One of my brothers had an avocado tree when he lived out in Pasadena... do you have any of those ? I wish I could grow one here but our winters are sometimes too harsh :(

We've been very lucky this summer and have been getting a LOT of rain here lately... saved us from Stage 3 water restrictions

WOM yes I do have two avocado trees but they are so young...nothing to post about. hahaha

love em, really a creamy meaty fruit. Pasadena is an older establishment...was the tree mature? How awesome. I wish we had an older tree for avocados.

I am looking at the persimmon and hoping they will stay on this year and mature

that is a yummy fruit too!!!

We might have gotten a little of your weather here??? It is warm and balmy and sometimes even a little rain. Or is that Floridian??? I dont know, all I do know is it is strange for us.

The lemon tree is covered with fat lemons just turning yellow... I have 2 Ruby Red grapefruit just starting to show a blush of color... the tangerine tree is heavy with fruit.....

All tropicals in patio pots (hibiscus, bougainvillea, jatropha, pentas, etc.) are still going strong but cold nights (lower 40s/upper 30s) are ahead so I am bringing them under the covered patio.

And orchids :D..................................

Nice! My orchids aren't in bloom yet. My last bloomer from this past season just stopped 2 weeks ago! Can you believe that? We had our first frost on Wednesday, but my balcony didn't frost because my tuberous begonias are still blooming.

I'm on the hunt for stachys byzantina (lamb's ears) and am having a ####### time finding it. God a bunch of awesome ferns in trade though, and Ammar is totally nixing getting an urn. He hates the idea and is refusing. So i am stuck with not living out my urn-vision and instead having to make due with pots I have. I'm going to rearrange my orchids and requisition one of my bigger mexican pots. I also need to repot my african violets.

LOL what you planning to do with an urn ?

I have 9 phals and 2 dens in regrowth mode (sprouting new leaf) About 8-9 phals in bloom right now. I also "branched out" (haha) and added some cattleyas and 3 vandas to my collection/addiction :o The vandas spent the fall hanging under the back covered porch, but have just been moved to hang in the shower in the small bathroom as we start getting cold weather.

Unfortunately I lost one of the ferns I planted out front, but the other 2 are doing great. I think I will add a few more of that species next spring.

All of my phals look good and my iwangara. They are just not quite in the right time yet I think. One has a small spike beginning off an old spike, but that's all I have seen so far.

I wanted to put my ostrich ferns in the urn. That would have been awesome. Imagine:

and some golden creeping jenny (lysimachia)

trailing over the sides. :(

I am giving away lemons tomorrow to my colleagues at work, but I think I will still have more than enough to make a lemon pie. Lemon meringue sounds tempting...

LOL awww. Yeah. he says we have no room, but his vision of the balcony is plant-free. He thought we had too many pots out there when we had one pot. Now he says we have no space for this one, but I probably have about 4x4' of pots if you put them together... and the balcony is 4x12. i have plenty of room for this urn and it wouldn't interfere with any walking or anything, but be firmly against a wall. Oh well. So at the moment, my ferns sit in a bag while I decide where to put them.

This is a "heritage bulb" that the previous owner of my home had planted decades ago, and it comes up every year in the fall - "golden lycoris" or "golden spider lily." It's not as common as the red but just as pretty....

Love the yellow! I have some of the red.

Yeah, well, when I got them in teh mail they were packed in a bag. he knows they are out there, but hasn't seemed to put it together that they need a home. Well, he probably has, but just doesn't care.
