Government Work

I live in the Norfolk, Virginia Beach area. There are a lot of job opportunities here in the shipyards, some of them connected to military bases as government contractors. Many of the jobs require security clearances. My question: Once my fiance and I are married, and he completes his AOS, can he work in a government contract job with his green card? My instinct says no, but I thought I would post here to see if I could gain some insight. Thanks!

Almost all facilities are mixed between things you must be a USC and those that maybe not , but rather than have additional entry controls all over the companies go the easy route and only hire USC's. There is a process to get a non USC in but they would have to be the one in a million type of expert in whatever the job is about.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Please be VERY careful with these jobs. Some say in the fineprint that you need to be a USC to apply and simply by applying you are saying you are a USC (if it doesn't specifically ask if you are or not). I went to apply for a job and it took some searching around their website to see that only USC's should apply so it was a good thing I didn't!

When I worked for the election polls I saw immigrants working. There is a way to work. U get around 200 for training and about 200 per election. Not bad if u r not working. They defiantly need bilingual people. I've worked with a Chinese man who hardly knew English but was delighted to help out intermixed community.

It is possible, however I would check with the authorities in that area. Luckily I got a job building Film Capacitors with proper security clearance.

I have been contacted by some agencies to work as Translator. But I am required to be either a US citizen or have at least 5 years of residence. But for other positions they might just accept US Citizens. What about the Army? If the person plans to become a US citizen, and has an outstanding background, they can help your husband to expedite the citizenship.

Non-US citizens are indeed allowed to work for government contractors as well as directly for a government agency provided they have EAD. I personally was involved in running background checks for contractor employees and know with ABSOLUTE certainty the answer is YES.

There are some jobs that require a security clearance and will be open specifically to a USC though.

I'd love to hear how the job hunting is going as I am local to you, Chesapeake, and will be assiting my fiancee in her employment search soon.

Many government agencies do indeed use USAjobs.com for hiring but some do not. Navy Exchange, MWR, and Commissary all have their own web sites for hiring. Again, not all government jobs require a USC to fill them, even on USA jobs.com. I personally know many non-USC working at my base.

Majority of all Government Jobs Go thru USAjobs.gov or similar websites and in the job postings they list WHO CAN APPLY- Must be a United States citizen to be eligible to apply

But don't forget that below Federal level, the vast majority of government jobs (State, County, Minicipality) are open to non-citizens.

As always, check carefully before you apply, but never assume you are automatically barred from a local government position.

Jobs that require a security clearance are only open to US citizens. Also, having a non-citizen spouse makes it extremely hard to get one. Since my wife in Chinese and her family is still there, I didn't even bother applying to jobs that would have required a security clearance when I was last looking for employment.
