Thank you so much ;) just making sure what my husband received last August 2011 was the NOA2.

But we still have to wait until he passed his naturalization this coming May. Hopefully it'll make our nvc journey speed up

Fingers crossed ;)

NOA-2 has no official meeting. Notices from the USCIS are sent on Form I-797 (Notice of Action). These can be receipt notices, approval notices, Requests For Evidence (RFEs) and maybe others.

Receipt notices are referred to as a NOA1 on Visa Journey. Many refer to an approval notice as a NOA 2 but it just means second notice which could be an RFE in which case your approval notice would be an NOA3.

Confusing right? Which is why we should just use the terms receipt notice, approval notice, or RFE and forget the NOA1, NOA2, etc.

No. NOA2 ALWAYS refers to the approval notice. RFE's are called RFE's and though I have never personally received one, examples I have seen do NOT say "Notice of Action" on it, they say "Request for Further Evidence" so they could never be referred to as NOA2 because they are NOT a NOA. Packet 3 is called Packet 3 because it's the 3rd stage of the process. Packet 4 is the 4th. Both are called "packets" because they're packets of forms/info. Used to be physical packets but are now mostly electronic.

Also these are not VJ specific terms. Here's a site for example that explains it: http://integrity-legal.com/legal-blog/us-visa-immigration/what-is-uscis-notice-of-action-2-noa-2/

That is incorrect. An RFE is a Notice of Action issued on form I-797. A RFE can be a second notice - It was in my case. An Approval says Notice of Action and below that states "Approval Notice". A RFE says Notice of Action and below that "Request for Evidence". The type of notice is always listed separately.

As I said the terms NOA 1, NOA2 are meaningless and are never used officially.

Just say what it is, receipt notice, approval notice or RFE. I read almost daily that someone "had their NOA2 approved" which of course makes no sense.

Alright, I stand corrected on what RFE's look like, as I said I've never received one so I don't know personally and can only use examples found online (which are obviously old).

Forums always have their own shorthand. Whether these terms are used officially or not VJ (which is the site you are on) uses NOA2 for the petition approval notice, not for RFE's. RFE's are RFE's. This means that the terms are not "meaningless" here, which is where they are used, as well as many other places online.

I understand what you're trying to say but the correct answer to the OP's question, as posted on VJ where the term is used, is "the NOA2 is the petition approval notice".

I know I am on an impossible mission to try to get people to say "Approval Notice" instead of "NOA2". It just seems so much more meaningful to me to say what it is instead of some invented term.

Oh well, I guess I will have to find some other battle to fight. :D
