My 10 yr old was born in Canada..His Dad and I were never married and I never pursued any US papers for him..

Today my daughter and I were approved on a k1 visa but they would not give my son one bc in their eyes he already had citizenship? they gave me a form told me i had to get some papers from his dad and to book an appt for a child born abroad interview? I need my sons birth certificate a signed letter of consent from his father to acquire a us passport ot a CRBA? my sons cdn passport and evidence his dad has resided in the US for 5 years??

And of course another $100 for CRBA

And 105 for his passport

Anyone gone through this? We booked an interview for next thurs? will we need anything else? how long? how long before we can get his passport?

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

We had planned on moving in 2-3 weeks.. UGGG

Yes you have access to it. You get an envelope, and then outside the envelope, free for you to use, is your passport with your visa glued inside. Do not open up the envelope.

I would check out the Ottawa embassy website or perhaps try e-mailing or calling them to ask what happens if you don't get your passport back in time- if some other photo ID is acceptable. No idea if they're fast/slow or good to replying to people, as I've never dealt with them before.

Sorry your son wasn't approved at Montreal. Hope they sort it out next Thursday :/

A CBRA is Consular Report of Birth Abroad certificate. It shows a child was born to a US citizen in another country.

Your son has US citizenship because his father is a US citizen. With out the CBRA there's no way to prove his citizenship or get him a US passport. You should have filed for a CBRA when he was born.. but hindsight is 20/20.

First you have to have the interview to apply for a CBRA. No idea how long that takes to issue. Once you have the CBRA you have to file to get a US passport for your son. If you are flying for POE, you HAVE to have a passport for him. If you are driving, he is under the age of 16 and his CBRA will allow him in to the US and you can apply for a passport after you arrive.

In order for a minor child to receive a US passport, both parents must sign the child's application and be present in front of an officer appointed to take US passport applications.

No idea how long it takes to get a US passport back from an Embassy. I do know when you apply in the US for a passport it only takes a few weeks. (mine only took 12 days)

As far as how long it takes to get a passport back from the consulate, I myself(USC) had to apply to replace my US passport and I received it back within a week and a half. When you apply for the CRBA they should allow you to apply for his US passport at the same time, so hopefully you will get his US passport back in time. Good luck! We plan on applying for CRBA for our 9 month old in a couple of weeks.
