Your existing loan rates are not going up. It is only the rate for newly issued loans that will be affected. All outstanding loans will not change.

Well at least he doesn't need to worry about that anymore. When HIS kids are in college it will cost $800,000 per year and then we will hear from him.

Does your daughter (or you) have loans for that amount for her education? :o Thats crazy! ( I do no tmean that personally, just a general reaction) Another reason our health care costs are so high...she will be paying more for her loans than for her house, PLUS paying for a house PLUS paying for medical care for herself which costs as much as a house and people wonder why it costs $100 to get a cavity filled.

Her mother paid some of the tuition, I paid a lot(no loans), and she took out loans for living expenses. Those living expenses go up a lot in the senior year with trips to interview at residency programs or visit potential job opportunities, state licensing exam fees and travel (and paying people to be your patient on the exam!). My daughter is down here in FL right now preparing to take the FL licensing exam. All told this week of prep and exams will be in the $7000 range. Then back to Louisville for graduation.

I don't feel quite so bad. A friend is in dental school in NJ and his tuition alone is $70,000 a year. Multiply by four, add in living expenses and don't forget to include the cost for the four years of undergraduate studies. As the bill starts closing in on half a million in debt without even talking about setting up a practice, one wonders if is worth it.

We are SO fortunate and this is why we have been SO adamant on the kids doing well in school. Our two older sons had scholarships, one athletic, one academic, Sergey is getting a scholarhip for the costly part in the US and we were able to pay his Russian education (the last year of his 5 year program was paid for by the school). We are crossing our fingers for Pasha, he is doing very well. I am pretty sure he will get something.

I think education is so important but it is SO expensive. If our doctors and dentists did not have to incur so much personal debt maybe our medical costs would be lower.

Where there is a will there is a way, but that kind of debt is just staggering. I would like to see Obama address something besides the interest rate on all that debt.

And hey, Congratulations! (I think?) There is no better investment than your children!

Thanks. Should mention she has a boyfriend that is a classmate of hers. He got a sweet deal with the military. They paid for a lot of his education and gave him some living expenses too. Now he owes them 4 years. He will be doing dentistry at Fort Campbell KY.

My son .....well that degree in Anthropology from Florida State didn't go very far, but he did use that to get into the PA (Physicians Assistant) program. It's an intense 28 month program but there is a great demand for PAs down here, and they get paid well.

Big demand for them here also and YES they do get paid well. In fact most of my regular appointments are with a PA. I get follow up letters from the doctor, but I actually see a PA.

Not a bad deal with the military. One of my brothers, a physician, did the same thing with the Navy and another got his medical school paid for by the state in return for working in a rural (underserved) area for four years. He liked it so much he bought into the practice and still lives there, enjoying his hunting and fishing. He does not make as much money as the other brother who practices in Chicago, but he has a heck of a lot of fun!

16 more months and he is done. Then the wife and I will have time and money for ourselves. YES!

I feel like "3 down and 1 to go" at this point. Once the kids are set, there is not much anyone can do to you...FTW! We kinda have the same plans. We will, hopefully, get started on them when Pasha goes to college. We moved him from Ukraine in 8th grade, dumped him in a place with a different language and now we want to keep things stable for him as he is doing well. Then we can hit the reset button and decide what we really want to do. It is a cinch all our kids are not going to be near us so we should probably live near an airport.

The wild card is Alla's mother. We will see, one can dream. Too bad you gotta be so old!

I'll agree that tuition costs are out of control. But to the unfortunate of us who have student loans up to our throats, a low interest rate is what keeps me able to pay them off comfortably. That 2% vs 6% difference is a rather large sum of money when we're talking $50k+

The only way to significantly decrease tuition costs would be government subsidies/funding, but I know of at lease a dozen states that can't afford that.

The only best way to significantly decrease tuition costs would be no government subsidies/funding, but I know of at lease a dozen 50 states that can't can afford that.

Tuition and students paying for it have been around long before the days of govt help interference. Research reveals a few studies that show the rise of tuition

correlates to govt subsidies/funding. Govt, is responsible for the out of control cost of college via artificial demand for higher education with subsidies and loans.
