Hello!

My Ukrainian passport is about to expire! I called my embassy in Washington DC and they told me that to extent it or to renew it I have to go back to Ukraine. I'm a green card holder, can I apply for renter permit or travel passport I-131 and go to Ukraine without Ukrainian passport and be able to return to US with the same travel passport or in Borispol, Kiev they will give me a hard time????

To renew my passport here is almost unreal or even impossible!!

Thank you very much for your help!!!

Renewing your passport here is very simple IF you are registered in Ukraine as a US permanent resident. You are not or you would not have this trouble. This means you need to renew your passport in Ukraine. You MAY be able to get a travel document through the consulate to go back after it expires. Best bet, go back BEFORE it expires. If you show up at the POE in Ukraine with an expired passport, there will be some problems.

Fortunately Ukraine now has a systme of expedited passports where an extra fee gets you a passport in just a few days so you would not need a very long trip. Ukraine will renew passports within two years of their expiration date so there is never a rush.

Re-entering the US is not your problem, your green card does that for you. Your concern is having a travel document to ENTER Ukraine. There is nothing the United States can issue to make up for an expired passport.

The option is to stay here until you become a citizen, get a US passport and then go to Ukraine using the US passport

My wife just renewed her passport in DC. They did charge us an extra fee not listed and claimed it was a "recent increase mandated by Kiev" we just paid the extra 50 dollars and had the new passport in a few days. My wife was not "Registered" they just made her fill out some extra paperwork and put a stamp in her new passport.
