I have a question regarding collecting Employment Insurance once I have the EAD. May have been asked somewhere before but I am unable to locate the answer. When receiving Employement Insurance from Canada will the check be issued in Canadian dollars or US dollars? I had a check sent to me from the MTO for the return of my Ontario license plates and the bank would not cash it here because it was in Canadian dollars and not US dollars so that is why I am asking this question about EI. If it is in Canadian dollars how would you go about cashing this check in the US? Anyone currently collecting Canadian EI be able to answer this question? Also if it is in US dollars can you do direct deposit into a US bank account as well with EI? Any assistance to these questions would be greatly appreciated as I may have my EAD by the end of May first of June and would like to know what to expect in advance. Thanks

The cheques are issued in Canadian funds, drawn from a Canadian bank. Your bank probably won't "cash" the cheque, but should be able to deposit it. that's what my bank does - it takes about an extra week for it to process, but it goes through, and the exchange rate is decent. If your bank absolutely refuses to do this, look around for another bank.

EI will not do direct deposit outside Canada at all, as far as I know - I think cheques are the only option if you are outside Canada.

Another option would be to do direct deposit into a Canadian bank account and then sign up for Custom House to transfer the money.

I did direct deposit into my old TD Canadian bank account which was still open. It was a lot easier than dealing with the US bank and their confusion over foreign cheques in foreign currency.

Been MANY posts on here on how many have troubles depositing a Cdn cheque into a USA bank. Yes, for some it is no problem! So check with your bank. Some charge fees, some give crappy exchange rates and some are just clueless! I had cheques mailed back to me for some bogus reason. Have used Customhouse since 2005 and it works very well. Last yr it was bough tout by Western Union, but still works very well.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
