Me too. You can get a new passport for free if you apply within a year of getting married, but I won't be back within a year to do the name change thing, and I can't do it from here.

You can do it from here... You save over $200 so if it's possible I totally recommend it.

What I meant to say was I can't be bothered to do it from here :) It sounds like a lot of hassle and more forms and fees which I'm a little tired of at this point.

My current passport is fairly new so replacing it is not going to save me that much anyway.

Out of curiosity has anyone had any luck changing their name with RBDM by mail, and then applying for the free passport (after marriage) from within the US? The Australian embassy website doesn't mention the free passport.

They don't change the expiry date on your passport, it's just a nae change on it so for me seeing my passport was only about 2 years old it made total sense to change to married name for the last 8 years :) If it was close to expiring it wouldn't matter.

I have heard of people doing it by mail no probs. I wish I could remember the name of the person I talked to but apparently the gratis passport is no issue here either.

It's totally OK to not change my name at all (in any country) after I get married, right?

My theory...is that by the time i get to visit Australia i will be a dual citizen...and am hoping that i can just travel on a US passport so the maiden name oz passport won't be an issue...and then change my name while i'm there :)

Lainie, i'm the same as you, really can't be bothered doing it from here, lol

You mean just keep your maiden name? Of course! Much easier in my opinion.

Yep, ok cool! Thank you!

Yes totally fine if you want to keep your maiden name overall, or keep your maiden name in one country and married in another. Confusing (remembering what name you're known as where) but fine :)

Well yes and no. You'll need to carry your wedding certificate because you need to flash your Aussie passport as proof of ability to enter Aus.

Obviously it's totally up to you guys when/where you wanna do it. I did it in Aus only because I had a family emergency that meant I was going to be back in time to do it. That's why I created the thread though because I had full intentions of doing it here in the US. It saves a decent amount of money and confusion later (in my opinion) and it also made me feel more like Mrs. Tony :) - though I will admit that I'm pretty well known back home so I still identify by maiden name when calling people :P
