I've read that USD $5,000 is the limit the Vietnamese government will let you take out of Vietnam? Any truth to that? Do they use money sniffing dogs like the US? I was planning to take extra cash, but I may have to adjust my methods if it's going to be seized by the VC.

Are you a US citizen or Vietnamese citizen? Is someone immigrating?

Tourists are not allowed to take more money of the country than they brought in.

I'm a US citizen and visited Vietnam on a visa exemption to visit my wife. I was never offered any customs forms entering or leaving the country, and I took over $5,000 out with no issues.

Anyways, that's my anecdotal evidence I'm sure others could give you more advice.

Don't worry, be happy.

$5k your money or someone else's money (hers/whoever else's)?

You've gotta careful to transport money from a foreign country. (dirty money is a possibility)

Vietnam is a well-known fraudulent country (about almost everything. They're famous for counterfeiting stuff).

And when someone is well enough to own property there, why would they sell their stuff to move somewhere half the world away from their family? because of their love for you? And when they're that well off on their own, they would probably already know someone in the States to make the asset transferring as they deem necessary. They just don't "hand" over their $$$ to you, whom they just know for a very short period of time.

Get real and more importantly, GET SMART!

And the punishment for cocaine trafficking in VN is the DEATH PENALTY!

are they paying you to marry their daughter? this is the second thread you've asked about taking >10k out of vietnam. i've never been detained upon entering/leaving vietnam or usa...but anything's possible. on the vn side you can probably bribe them in the back room (although 10k usd is alot different than a couple illegal dvds). i've helped carry 8k back for a friend in the usa, the family wanted to give more (15k) but i felt i could talk my way out of 8k if something happened, not so confident above the 10k threshold.

The official limit is 5k but nobody asked when I left last time or when my girl brought more out with her. You never know when a corrupt VN customs guy will decide to give you trouble to help pay for his Mercedes.

Vietnam laws states that you must declare when you take more than $5k out of Vietnam.

Wouldn't the VN customs guy who stop you from illegally taking more than $5k out of VN just following the law?

How can you justify breaking the law based on blaming some "corrupt VN customs guy?"

Funny when Viet Kieu can justify breaking currency control laws and accuse the officer in charge of catching that as being corrupt.

Sometimes, Viet Kieu are corrupt when they break Vietnamese laws by illegally taking money out of Vietnam.

I see nothing wrong if the "corrupt VN custom guy" had stopped your girl from committing a crime by illegally taking more than $5K out of Vietnam.

And how does this justify your girl breaking the laws of a sovereign nation? If one person break the law, then it is okay for another person to break the law?

No, they are not paying me to marry her. I think you misread my first post in regards to moving money between countries, I first asked about taking more than $10,000 out of the USA, not Vietnam.

Since I'm staying there for over a month. I need money to pay for the wedding reception, the wedding itself, pictures, my hotel, stuff I asked my fiancee to buy for the wedding, side trips, food, stuff people want me to buy, my relatives' expenses, possible trips outside Vietnam, giving my future wife some money to live on, etc. This is easily going to cost USD $8,000 minimum plus any unplanned expenses. You should be able to see why I need to carry that much money.

FWIW, first post in this thread asked about taking $$ out of Vietnam. That may have lead to your mix up.

You can always wire money via Western Union to yourself from the US if you want to have a smaller amount on hand at the start. Might help keep everyone's spending in check if you show up with a smaller wad.

Sounds like one heck of a party for $8K.

If this is happening after July 1, I'm crashing the party. :)
