SSN Confusion

Hello everyone. All this paperwork is a pain in my #######! I went to apply for a Social Security Number today... I left being confused.

Just to let you know the details. I arrived in the States on April 5th, 2012 on a K-1 Visa.

I went today (April 23rd, 2012) to the Social Security office to apply for my number and card.

I arrived, I told them I was on a K-1 visa, I was called by name.

The guy took my application form, my passport and my I-94. He was entering stuff in the computer while I sat there. The only thing he asked me was if Patrick was a common name in Ireland...!? What made this question odd is that Patrick isn't my name, it was just a random though he had, haha. But anyway.....

He left to photocopy my stuff and came back and told me: 'for some reason you don't have clearance yet from DHS'. He wasn't able to tell me why this was. He gave me a typed letter saying:

This is to acknowledge that you applied for a Social Security Number on April 23, 2012.

Before we can issue you a Social Security number card, we must veriify the document(s) you gave us to show your Citizenship Alien with the Federal, State, or local office in the United States that issued the document(s). This may take up to 4 weeks.

If that office verifies the authenticity of your document(s) we will mail you a Social Security number card. If that office does not verify your document(s), you are not eligible for a Social Security number card and we will inform you of this in writing.

etc. etc. etc.

THEN, he said I should receive something within 4 weeks. If not, go back to the office.

So, what's going on? Standard procedure?

PS. Patrick is fairly common. Along with shortened versions; Pat, Paddy. And the Irish version; Padraig.

The wonders at Department of Homeland Security have not entered you and your visa number into the system yet. When the guy at SSA went to look you up, you weren't there. As of yet, you do not exist. He made copies of everything because he knows you're eligible for a SSN, he's sending the copies of the documents to higher ups so something can be done about it.

Wait a few weeks and if you haven't received your card, go back and find out what the hold up is.

Don't worry it is normal. I just went thru that too and in 3 weeks we had our SSN.

I go to the SSA office, explain the situation.

The woman looks confusingly at the computer screen. Gets up, gets the copies of my Papers. Comes back mumbling something to herself. Pushes some buttons. Then tells me that I have cleared Homeland Security and that I should have my card in 5-10 days...

More waiting.

It's over 4 weeks since I first applied for it...

Disgraceful!
