I went to the Social Security office last Monday and Uyen was not in their system since it was only one week since she arrived. So the lady gave me a letter stating to come back in 4 weeks if I haven't heard anything or received the card in the mail. However, Uyen's uncle insisted I take her this coming Tuesday morning on my day off nd try again to see if she is in the system. Should I call the 1-800 number and try to ask them, go back to the SS office, or hold off a little while longer. I know Uyen's uncle will ask me if I took her Tuesday and I do want her to get the SSN, but not sure what to do now??

Take her back to the office. If anything it will get her from the Uncle and you two alone.

why is the uncle insisting? the ssn is not very important in the grand scheme of things (at the moment). i don't like his mettling already. i'd tell him to go pound sand :)

I had to go through this with my babe and her Uncle. Still do. I married a family apparently. I so much want to tell her Uncle to go away but somehow we are actually friends now. It is a pain in the azz though.

It can take a few weeks to get the ssn. The time frame should be listed on the paperwork you got at poe.

I was able to get it on the 4th or 5th day but yes it can take longer. The main thing you need to do is get married and start the AOS. At the least do the civil wedding. She can't do anything here without the AOS.

My point being, no reason to pester them before the allotted time. They are most likely just going to tell you to wait. Of course, to appease the uncle, it doesn't hurt to ask, but it really is a waste of time.

Well I called the 1-800 number today and gave them my fiancee's reference number. The lady said it could take 4-5 weeks to get the card. Does this sound about right? This Thursday, I meet with the Catholic priest who can speak both English & Vietnamese to find out more on what we have to do before we get married.

My fiancee didn't get any paperwork after she passed through customs.
