Hello Everyone,

My husband is trying to send me money from Tunisia.. He's found it very difficult and impossible when he's been talking to the bank and trying to tranfer thru moneygram. His uncle is living in Algeria and thinking of having him wire the money to me.. What are the chances of the transaction??

All your replies are appreciated...

As long as it's under US$10,000 he should be able to send you a certified bank check in the mail (registered if you want more security then you will sign for it when it arrives) and you can just put it into your bank account. It will clear in about 10 working days.

Thanks for your reply. But 10 working days is too long, is there a quicker transfer transaction?? What about wiring money?

Algeria has fairly strict currency controls which makes getting money out of the country difficult. That said, his best bet is to go to one of the French banks that operate in the country and ask if it is possible and how best to do it. Simply wiring money out is likely going to be impossible, though.

While it is quite easy to send money TO Tunisia, it is very difficult to send money out. When I worked there, I was able to transfer a percentage of my money every month to my US bank account. However, this usually takes 2 weeks. I do know that when we were leaving (May 2010) they were changing the bank laws. Given that the money is a closed currency, the best way may be to send a moneygram/western union. However, the situation in Algeria is almost the same concerning their monetary policy. I would also try going to an international bank such as HSBC or Parisbas and seeing if there's a way he can do an international transfer from their institution. Good Luck wa rabi ma3k.

Working in Turkmenistan, spouse is with me.

Tunisian dinar is a closed currency, it is not transferable to any other currency outside of Tunisia. No other country will exchange their money for Tunisian dinar. We have found no way around this other than illegal black market purchase of Euros NOT recomended!!

This would be the only correct answer so far! We agree. Not cool but they really don't care what we think really.

If you know Tunisians in the US who send money home to their families it might be easier. For example, instead of sending money home, they can give you US dollars, and then your husband can give their family Tunisian dinars.
