She should have taken a shot at an unarmed kid with candy - and make it count - and she'd be home free. Welcome to the Sunshine State.

Respectfully.... You guys keep bringing up candy and skittles. It appears in virtually every one of your posts on this topic. Do you mind explaining the relevance of this? Just a plain old appeal to emotion?

Right Wingers are no strangers to hyperbole. That said, I don't think it adds anything to the discussion.

I think this must be the first time Mr Big Dog has ever been labelled a Right Winger. I wonder if he knows he's Karl Rove's new best friend?

The two cases are incomparable. The husband in this case successfully convinced the court that she endangered her children. The punishment was severe, but totally unconnected to the zimmermann case.

And Zimmerman did not endanger a minor? Trayvon might disagree!

I think all too often people make wrong comparisons, false dichotomy, and moral equivalence when it comes events like this and it's a disservice to any meaningful discussion. Each case is uniquely different. Some liberal media outlets are trying to imply that because it was a woman (a Black woman no less), that she wasn't afforded the same consideration as Zimmerman. That's a huge stretch and it's dishonest.

Even if there is an element of truth?

BTW: For what it's worth, the liberal media is already convinced Zimmerman will walk. If he does walk, then the left will use the case as evidence that "Stand Your Ground" and "Concealed Carry Weapon" laws are putting the public at risk (and they would be right). If he gets 20 years in prison, then the left will have to pick another fight, somewhere else.

All the gun nuts, and the law and order types should be hoping Zimmerman gets the most severe sentence possible, to show the laws are working (even if they are not).

Most people don't seem to understand the legal parameters for these 'Stand Your Ground' laws, but assuming you're right and most liberals think these 'Stand Your Ground' laws are terrible (I disagree), they should at least appreciate the legal leeway in the term 'reasonable.' Any law that uses that word would be a judicial activist's wet dream, and we all know that only liberal judges are judicial activists.

If prior laws required someone with a gun to retreat at great risk of serious injury or death, standing your ground, sounds reasonable to me. If, however, these laws make it near impossible to convict any paranoid, gun-toting, cop-wannabe for shooting unarmed people, then we need to tweak or rewrite them so these laws will be used by gun-owners who truly worry about defending themselves.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

If he gets convicted then "then the left will use the case as evidence that "Stand Your Ground" and "Concealed Carry Weapon" laws are putting the public at risk (and they would be right wrong)." All to show that the left will never let an opportunity to undermine anything that frightens them slip away.

I think her husband had the better lawyer on this one.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I am not as scared of a toothless tiger, as I am of a wasp. Fear is a good thing, when it is reasonable.

Fair enough. Maybe your idea of "reasonable fear" is simply......er, different, from mine.

Between May 2007 and Mar. 24, 2010 9 police officers and 142 non-LEOs were killed nationwide by CHL holders (around 0.003%of all homicides in the same time period). (here are the sources....you will probably trust them-Fedgov and the hoplophobic VPC): "Concealed Carry Killers," Violence Policy Center website, Mar. 24, 2010; "Crime in the United States, 2007," FBI website, Sep. 2008}

So in any given year, your chances of being killed by a concealed carry permit holder are around 1 in 6.5 million.

Odds of being struck by lightning: 1 in 600,000. http://www.lightningsafety.com/nlsi_pls/probability.html

Odds of being mauled by a Grizzly: 1 in 1.9 million. http://www.sierraclub.org/grizzly/pdfs/Mauling.PDF

Odds of falling into a bathtub and drowning: 1 in 807,000. http://danger.mongabay.com/injury_death.htm

Lifetime odds of dying in a sand hole collapse: 1 in 3,982,000. http://politicalcalculations.blogspot.com/2009/04/odds-of-dying-again.html

You are in constant jeopardy! Danger Will Robinson!
