You cannot attend the interview without a passport with at least 6 months validity on it.

50 days? BS. This is India. Pay for "Tatkal" -- it should come within 7 days, more if you can grease a few palms.

After many months and many complications trying to obtain the documents for my fiance to obtain a passport we've been told that it will be another 50 days before he receives his passport. His interview is scheduled for May 1st. So my question is can he interview without the passport?

This is mission impossible. All you need is to contact the embassy and ask to reschedule. How do think that will be possible, to interview him without a passport, to interview him without an identity? This is like going for an examination with an ID, or without a pen to write with. Be wise my dear!

Passport is mandatory to attend the interview. Without passport, they wont even grant the access inside the building.

Why 50 days? cant he get under Tatkal? It may take few days to up to 2 weeks ( depend where he lives ).

If you are currently in Delhi just go to the embassy! It really is simple. Walk up to the table, flash your US passport and tell them you want to talk to a VO about a K1. Have his interview letter with you. Then go to the check in area in the visa section. Tell the same thing to the person handing out tickets. They will route you to the right part of the consulate.

You can typically go straight into the inner waiting area without sitting in the outdoor holding area since your a USC.

Wait for your number to be called and explain your situation to the Indian screener and ask specifically to speak to a VO. Then repeat it all to the VO including your concerns about not be present for a rescheduled interview. They should reschedule it right there and then including giving you a new interview letter.

If you aren't in Delhi currently -in your shoes - I 'd rearrange my schedule to do this. You do NOT need an appointment with them to go there...

Passport is crucial identification indeed - it's different from country to country however, I shoved my interview letter along with passport in order to be let into the embassy. I had to bring passport to the medical too.

Thanks for the info! I'm in Jaipur, so I can get to Delhi easily enough on an overnight bus and be there Monday morning. Up until yesterday we were of the understanding that the passport was being processed and we'd have it any day, but when we called the passport office to check on it they informed us that all passports were on hold due to an arrest of an administrator. As I've just spent six months in India it's unlikely that I'll be able to make it back again for another six months. So hopefully, we can make this come together somehow.

We think it's BS too, but as you said, "this is India" and in my experience things do not happen fast here. We have greased many palms along the way and this is how far we've come since October. Maybe tatkaal is the answer, though the passport office themselves told us it is not possible right now. We'll see, we just submitted an online application.

Sounds like they are looking for some additional $$$.

If - and that's a huge if - some passport official was arrested, it would more than likely be in the news. Go ahead and search the dailies online. If there is an article, print that off and take it with you to Delhi.

Your goal at the embassy is to establish with the VO that you aren't nuts and haven't had the wool pulled over your eyes. Now, if that is truly the case and you are being used [again, not saying you are] it will come out in the wash.

Yes, I went to the embassy to inform them of the situation with the passport office in Jaipur. They were totally understand and said I could contact them to reschedule the interview. We finally got the passport about two weeks ago, and we did pay an extra fee for them "expedite" it. The embassy didn't wait for me to contact them and rescheduled the interview for June 1st, so I had to cancel this one also. The interview has now been rescheduled for July 17th.
