I don't understand what black players for England have to do with anything. The Croatians formed the swastika because they were in Livorno.

Because Croatia play England in a European Cup qualifier tomorrow night and they are anticipating there will be trouble and/or racist chanting

I don't know -- call me a politically correct azzhole -- but I find the prospect of a stadium full of monkey chants whenever Ashley Cole gets the ball - as he did in Spain 2 years ago - to be completely unacceptable in a major international sports event, whether he gets bothered by it or not (and reportedly, he did)

But that's my question. Why do they think that? The swastika was in response to taunts in Livorno and specific to Livorno's left-wing politics.

Because Croatian supporters have a reputation for racist chanting -- they did it vs. France in Europe '04 for example complete with neo-nazi symbolism, monkey chants and go back to Africa chants

Ah ok, so it really isn't about this specific incident in Italy as this article implies (or maybe, as one would gather had they not thoroughly read the article ). Gotcha.
