You can get an SSN right away. Just bring with you your passport & I-94.

If u decided to get a SSN after marriage. They will still use your Maiden name.

Same here. Ritchie and I went to the local SSA office and applied in person with her passport with I-94 (not yet expired at the time) also with marriage certificate, but they would not issue the SS# in her married name. They told us that her married name was not in the USCIS (I think) system and therefore would not allow it to be processed. So they issued it in her maiden name, which is fine with us. The SS office rep erroneously told us we could go downstairs of that building to the immigration department and get her name changed which we did but they told us that was impossible and she had to wait until she applied for AOS and got approved and all that and then should could just easily submit a change request to the SS Admin office and ger her name changed to her married name.

Actually it depends on how "international" the local Social Security office is. Ours sees lots of immigrants and K1 visa holders.

We got married four days after arrival on a K1. Two days later the marriage certificate arived. We took her passport, I-94, marriage license, and marriage certificate to our local Social Security office and within two weeks she had her Social Security card in her married name They even did it filipino style with her old surname as her new middle name.
