if you already have a card, you should be able to add her to your account not have her apply under her ssn!

I agree with you. I should have tried that first, BofA was probably just trying to get us open up a new account and make some money off us, instead of using the same card.

However, what I said is what happened, and what they told me.

They said she would probably not qualify, and I believed them :bonk:

what they told you is kinda true. If she applied under her SSN withouth any credit history she most likely will be denied!

Bank of America is ... conservative.

Back when I was in college, credit card companies were handing out cards like beer cups at a frat party. I never had much money, so I passed. But when I graduated, and had a job in hand, B of A still wouldn't give me a card without a co-signer.

Fast forward 20 years, I go to the Citibank mastercard website, and click to get a card for my no-credit-history wife. Within 6 months the mailbox is full of credit offers in her name only. Now her credit score is just about the same as mine.

Speaking from experience of being denied credit, I came here for work before I met my husband, and got denied for everything for the first few months even though I was going to American Express and HSBC (where I already had account history in Australia, apparently they cannot share that information, they ought to be ashamed to claim they are a "global" business... Anyway, I digress). Basically, adding another person to a credit card account is not exactly the same as a savings or checking account. What you can do is have a "supplemental cardholder" who is authorized to use the credit card, but they are tied to the main account holder's credit and subject to the same conditions, card issuers will also allow you to set up limitations on supplemental cards if you wish.

Supplemental cards are also available for a lot of other things that are not banking related, for instance, my husband and I have supplemental cards for Costco and AAA memberships.

Cheers

Thanks everyone for all your support & concerns. I was able to add my wife to my Citi Credit Card today. Within 48 hours they will send a CC card with same # as mine but with her name instead. Also Citi will provide a statement mention both of our's SS & stating that she is an authrized user of my CC.

Also today I got a letter from work HR department regarding basic Life Insurance. The letter mention my wife as : PRIMACY BENEFICIARY 100%

I am not gonna bother to add her to my bank accout. Kindly let me know if I shoudl add her to back Account as well or just Credit Card shoudl be sufficient.

Thanks.

P.S: I am extremely sorry for using abusive words last night but I had to defend my wife's honor & i couldn't find any better way than using foul words.

that's exactly what I was talking about :)

Can I add my fiancee to my bank account (i.e. joint accounting) without her being present?

I am not sure, they would need her SSN but not sure if you can do it without her be present since she would possibly need to sign...but give it a try!

You might be able to do it over the phone or online. They would just mail you paperwork, sign it and mail it back.

So, today Citi Card sent me the Credit Card with wife's name & same number as mine. Also, they send the attached letter. Kindly let me know what you think of it.

Thanks.

"Authorized Non-User"? I think the Card with your wifes name is more convincing.
