Your last 24 hours

We are leaving Australia in 3 weeks to start our new lives and I wondered what everybody did their last 24 hours in their home country?

I rechecked all my check lists, made all my final goodbye calls to family and friends and bought a good supply of candy/lollies to pack into my check-in baggage.

Mrs. T-B.-to-be had 3 despedidas (going-away parties) in 3 Ecuadorian cities before hopping the plane. She arrived like a zombie and promptly came down with an awful lung infection, cough man. She was hawking major loogies until the antibiotics took over, oof man.

Took a 5 hour walk with my dog and a friend so my dog would sleep most of the time on the plane, same with me. Spending time with parents and stuffing the last junk into suitcases in a van they had borrowed for that purpose(travel light.. yeah right ). Then visiting my dearest (pregnant) friend) and off to the airport.

Edit: ..and skyping with husband for the remaining hours, as always. Computer was the last thing to get packed. : )

Finished my last day of work, confirmed arrangements with the movers and the cleaners (for when the movers had finished), loaded up the mini van when my fiancee arrived with everything coming with us except for the cats and their litter boxes, slept, got up early, dismantled the bed and carried it outside to meet the charity van picking up the bed and a few other items being donated, put the cats in their carriers, finished loading the van, gave the key to my next door neighbour to let in the movers and cleaners and left. Had breakfast on the road. Two days later arrived 'home'.

Tried to get in my favorite restaraunt meals before I left, LOL.(lunch and dinner, day before, and lunch before I left) Packed, loaded up the car, spent time with my son, ran a couple errands. On my way to border, stopped off at work, hugged all my co-workers and bf and I hit the road. 22 hours road trip, with stop off in Chicago to do some shopping and a nice dinner on 96th floor of one of their tallest buildings.. WHAT A VIEW!!!!

Had supper at my parents with my brothers, nieces and best friends after a long day of packing the UHaul truck! We left early the next morning and that was that. There were a few tearful goodbyes but we were all going to see eachother in 3 weeks down in Virginia for our wedding so it didn't seem final.

Almost 5 yrs later it seems like another life now.

In 1988 when I moved to the US, I spent a lot of time doing the final checks on packing. Also saying many goodbyes to family and friends.

I went to restaurants and ate food not easy to find in the US (POUTINE!!!!!) and met with friends and family.

Then also lots of moving stuff and cleaning out my apartment.

Went to dinner with my family and then bawled my eyes out. Most traumatizing 24 hours of my life.

The removal guys had already come and gone, so we packed up what little we had left to bring with us and took everything else to a charity shop (in the rain!). Spent a half an hour on the phone with the local council trying to convince them to pick up a mattress and boxspring (they wouldn't, despite a scheduled pickup) so we left it in the flat. Took a minicab to Luton and spent the night at a hotel near the airport. Had a delicious curry for dinner. Cried. Slept. Drank champagne for breakfast.

I visited family and also saw the Harry Potter exhibit at the Powerhouse Museum. Walked around the CBD of Sydney, reliving the memories of when I lived there and showing my K2 around the town. Repacked everything in my suitcases again...talked on skype. Mentally said goodbye to my homeland. Had a nice time.

Went for dinner with my now husband and my parents. Loaded the car up with a few boxes. Went to bed. Woke up early, then finished loading the car. Said my goodbyes to my parents and my uncle who came by. Bawled my eyes out. We left around 10 am, and stopped at Tim Hortons for breakfast on the way.
