Nothing differently than I am doing now.

The Arab Spring has brought democracy, but all the secular governments have been replaced with governments dominated by fundamental Islamic nutjobs. The Arab Spring has not resulted in better conditions for women or secular minded individuals. The Muslim Brotherhood is only slightly better than the Taliban - not by much in my opinion. Unfortunately, the Arab Spring is unleashing fundamental Islamic nutjobs who will deny rights to women and non-Muslims.

Democracy is not going to change Vietnam.

Do you think the Viet Kieu will be invited back with open arms? Hell no, the Vietnamese living there aren't going to let Viet Kieu tell them what to do. Good luck getting a Viet Kieu prime minister.

Do you think corruption is going to disappear? South Vietnam as a "democracy" was highly corrupt. The US/CIA backed puppet governments rigged every election.

Democracy is not going to change Vietnam in any significant way.

You mean, what if the Democrats didn't pull the plug on a successful program called Vietnamization? You mean what would Vietnam be like if Congress supported the Republic of (South) Vietnam, instead of cutting off all military and humanitarian assistance? Nixon and Kissinger had put that war firmly in the win column, and that pissed off the likes of George McGovern, so they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory...

And Vietnam would have most likely ended up like North and South Korea while costing the US god only knows how much money to keep troops there.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

North Korea and South Korea have been separated since then end of World War II. That's over 65 years ago. Legally, the Korean War never ended. An armistice was signed, and technically the two countries are still at war. This is why the US has over 35,000 troops along the North Korean and South Korean border. A border separated by miles of land mines.

North Vietnam and South Vietnam hasn't existed since 1975. There is only one country. It is extremely unlikely that Vietnam will return to being two separate countries. Democracy isn't going to end at the old North Vietnam and South Vietnam border. There is nothing there. The majority of the land mines there are gone.ccThe Vietnamese aren't going to reform a border to separate the country.

If Vietnam was to become a democracy, it would be as a single nation. The US will not have to put troops there.

The Korea situation is completely different from the Vietnam. The only commonality is "north" and "south" and "asian."

Yemen with it's political situation where the central government does not control vast parts of the country is more likely to split back into North Yemen and South Yemen before Vietnam splits up again.

You missed the entire point. A poster was posting about "what if" the US had won that war, and I pointed out what it would have been like if the US did win that war. It would have been a country divided with a lot of troops on the border.

As far as North and South Korea...they are the same people, same language, different governments.

The US did win that war, by bombing the ####### out of Hanoi, and forcing the North to make major concessions. The anti-war Democrats in Congress, bitter after McGovern's landslide loss in 1972, decided they would rather forfeit the country to the Communists, than let Nixon make good his campaign promise of, "Peace with Honor."

Ha. Ha.

The Viet Kieu community is going to be really pissed that no one told them the US won the war. Why endure death as boat people when the US won the war?

And damn it, all my history books are wrong. Must scratch out "US lost the Vietnam War" and replace it with "US won the Vietnam War."

That's me at the top of the ladder. The US Embassy told me that the US won the war, and we were going on a victory tour of the city.
