The right wing extremist who has confessed to murdering 77 people -- many of them teenagers -- in a shooting and bombing spree in Norway cried at the start of his trial today, but not for his victims.

Anders Breivik told the court he acknowledged the mass murder but pleaded not guilty, claiming it was done in self-defense as part of his war against "multiculturalism" in the European nation. He expressed no emotion as he entered his plea but broke down and had to wipe away tears when the court played a portion of a propaganda video he had made in support of his new "crusade" in Norway.

Breivik is accused of carrying out the July 2011 bombing in Oslo, Norway, that killed eight people, followed by a shooting spree at a nearby youth summer camp that claimed another 69 lives.

Before the massacre, Breivik posted a 1,500 page manifesto online in which he said he was just one operative in the beginning of a violent Christian conservative revolution in Europe led by a group called the new Knights Templar. Breivik had planned on a 60-plus year struggle against mutliculturalism until the Knights would take control over Europe, the manifesto said.

A court official pointed out today that in a picture Breivik had apparently taken of himself, he had digitally altered the image to include a patch that read, "Multicultural Traitor Hunting Permit… Tagging Not Required… No Bag Limit."

Breivik said today that he did not recognize the authority of the court since it got its "mandate from the Norwegian political parties who support multiculturalism."

I'd love to sit down with this guy, drink a beer and pick his brain.

People like this are really interesting because they do what so many are afraid to do, yet want to do.

Getting into the head of someone like this could really help define that trigger mechanism in the brain that makes someone follow through with their overall thoughts.

Let's be honest, there are millions out there that think like this guy, but millions that don't have the "guts" to follow through with their thought process. The question is, what makes him different.

As someone who loves studying human behavior, this guy is definitely one for the ages.

That might be because millions of people out there still have good moral and don't follow through their ideology by killing nearly hundred of innocent people, most of them children.

In his case, his belief is strong enough to justify whatever means it takes to make his statement.

Perhaps, you would want to read his 1500 pages manifesto. It was released/leaked last year. I am sure you can still find it somewhere on the internet.

I read through some of it, it is strikingly shocking and very interesting. He doesn't appear to be a "nut head" or insane in anyway. He is quite normal actually and I can honestly say I can relate to many things he has written down.

Though, he has a very strong belief in his ideology. Some might say delusional and lost touch to reality. So if you want to pick his brain, you will enjoy reading it.

Paul, if you want to study human behavior, then you'd have to start by studying humans. This guy doesn't fit that bill. Aside from appearance, there's nothing human about him.

Being human is a lot more than what your personal definition of morality is. I hate to break it to you.

Good morals? By whose opinion? Morality is an opinion relative to the individual. His might be different than yours, but to say that others are moral and he is not, is nothing but pure opinion by you and those who might agree with you. - Sorry, I always correct people on morality and what it "means."

On his beliefs being strong enough. I know plenty of people who believe things deep down who would never do what he did. They can believe things should be a certain way to the bottom of their heart and soul, but then never follow through with an action. Beliefs are one thing. Actions on those beliefs is another. For some, 'waiting for someone else to do it' usually is their answer because they 'know' that someone else will do it for them. Be it another person or a "god."

Either way, reading is one thing. Talking to someone face to face is another. You learn so much more about ones emotion from picking their brain face to face than you do reading a so-called manifesto. A manifesto gives you an idea, but is never a true substitute for the real thing.

Paul, as an Ayn Randian cultist, the rule of "do no harm to others" would apply here, would it not? Or are you thinking that one can make an argument for justifiable homicide as an act of self defense if others are harming you (in your view)?

LOL - since when have I made any claim to be an Ayn Rand cultist? Actually, I've told you on multiple occasions how her philosphy applies to you and your view of government/business.

In regards to this story, all I've said that as someone who studies athropology I'd love to pick this guys brain. He's interesting and different. Well, not different in his thought process as there are plenty who think just like he does, but in the fact that he was able to turn his thoughts into actions. It's amusing.

Interesting that you think my political views are more in line with Ayn Rand than yours. So you don't espouse to the principals of Libertarianism?

My principals are simple: You leave me alone, I'll leave you alone.

I've pointed out your views match with hers in your fight against corporate influence in government. Rand hated businesses that got their way through government. You both today would loathe the fact that companies are treated like people and how the government has run amok thanks to that influence. You'd be surprised how much you'd have in common with her.

The problem is that people don't look at what Rand actually stood for. They hear "free market" and freak out thinking that means something horrible. Rand loved a free market without the influence of a corrupt government. Rand didn't hate the government at all. She hated the government that was influenced and controlled by other busineses trying to drive out their competition through legislation. If you actually looked at/read through any of her work/knew of her ideals outside of what's randomly posted on the internet by those who supposedly hate her, you'd know this.
