im a little confused here - i am a LPR - will apply for N-400 also. But i have a full valid SSN right now - that is how i am able to work and pay taxes etc.

its unrestricted as far as i know as it doesnt say anything about it being restricted on it.

So - why does the OP need to wait on the SSA for anything? Surely they were LPR also? which means an unrestricted SSN too?

Are you sure your Social Security card is not stamped "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION"?

I like all my i-s dotted and all my t-s crossed

So after my naturalization I went to the DMV and got a new driver's license - without the 'A' on it.

While I was at the DMV I also registered to vote.

I then notified my employer and gave them a copy of my CoN.

Three weeks later I updated my status with the SSA - and received a new SS card, which looks exactly like the old one?

Then I went to the post office and applied for a new passport (book and card).

The process of updating public records and getting documentation completed took a total of eight weeks.

As far as I know, to update your I-9 with your employer, CoN is not listed among the documents anymore. They ask for US Passport. Maybe I am mistaken but I do not see CoN here for the I-9 instructions: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf

Are you sure your Social Security card is not stamped "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION"?

If you are a Legal Permanent Resident (aka Greencard holder) and updated your records with SSA, then your SSN card has not that label since you are authorized to work anywhere in the US.

Right after my oath ceremony I went to the social security office. The person copied the CON and told me that it would be updated in a couple weeks and that I would not receive a new card (had already removed DHS warning when became LPR). I actually received a confirmation letter in the mail that my status was updated to citizen.

Then I walked over to the DMV and updated my info there (same day).

Two days after my oath I went to the passport agency in Manhattan (was passport day and there were no lines) and four days later received my passport, passport card, and CON in the mail. No, I didn't expedite or pay overnight delivery...

N-400

February 22, 2011: Sent N-400 VAWA package

Interesting, I did exactly the same, but I did not receive any kind of confirmation letter. Anyone else who did not want a new card but received a confirmation letter?

Nope, I first got my US passport with a routine application. It arrived in 4 weeks. Once I got my passport, I went to the SSA to update my citizenship info. I did not show them my CON, just the US passport.

I swear I thought we had to go to change our SS status right after we left the ceremony place.

So, we don't have to?

Nope, in fact the officiator at our ceremony repeated many, many times while they were seating us all (all 4,439 of us, took almost 2 hours), NOT to go to the SS office until 30 days after the ceremony as they take a little bit of time to update their systems.

I wasn't actually aware of that but since I waited for my passport to arrive anyway, I went to the SSA office one month after the ceremony. So looks like a did the right thing by coincidence

Good to know this! Thank you!

I'm still waiting for the approval and oath letter:

As a natural born US citizen was told at the ripe old age of 16, had to get an SS card before I could get a job in the salt mines. I can't think of one instance over these years where I ever showed my card to any one. Just memorized and wrote down my SS number.

Same with my wife, because of this stupid American Patriot Act, couldn't even add her to my bank account. Can tell you, I don't have 25 million bucks in my account, more like a buck eighty-nine, but in no way, could I add her to my account. Until she had that SS number. After months, we finally received her EAD card, I filled out the form for her, had her sign it, took her passport and EAD card to our SS office 37 miles away, I have to go there on business. Two weeks later she received that restricted card, but we went to my bank together. Was asked her SS number, she never showed the card, and didn't know what her SS number was, memorized that and gave it to the bank officer. She plugged that number in her computer and said it was good. Finally, my wife was on my account and had 94.5 cents to spend.

Since then, just updated that same form stored on my computer when she received her green card, took her card with me, then her certificate, just changing the date and the immigration status check box. But she has never shown her card either, even for a job application, but is always asking me what her SS number is. I think she finally memorized it now.

Something now about the DOS checking with SS about your citizenship status now as they just received a hundred million bucks from Obama to keep track of this stuff. Now I wonder why in the hell if they have that information, they still want you to mail in your original naturalization certificate that can get lost. Perhaps is the reason why I feel I live in a country ran by idiots. But have to be very careful with that experienced opinion, powerful arrogant holding an ax over your head idiots, and they don't like being called that. But nevertheless, still idiots.

I was at SSA office today. The lady took a copy of my naturalization certificate and name change paper, and told me they cannot process my application right away because there is a message in the computer saying "hold for 10 days". So she took my current ssn card, printed out a letter for my which read I just applied for an updated card, and told me to wait for 10 days until the USCIS updates my immigration status, after that SSA will issue and mail my new card for me.
