Alright i have another question guys ,

My husband sent me to a driving school which cost $370 for lecture and defensive driving.

I'm already done with my lecture class and the time we visited the DPS for taking the written test

they said they can't do anything about my k1 visa and passport.

They are actually looking for any other identification aside from my passport and visa , they asked about my SSN.

I don't have my SSN because my husband didn't allow me to apply for that not unless we're married.

Now that we are finally married , we plan to apply for my SSN.

Do you think i can still apply for SSN using my single name even after the date of marriage and update it later with my marriage surname so that everything will match to my passport and visa? Coz if i'm gonna use my husband's surname it won't match any longer and i'm afraid we will encounter problem upon applying for SSN and won't allow me to take the written exam for the driving permit.

We would like to get my drivers license soon coz i'm going to school in fall. Btw , we are still waiting for our marriage contract to be on hand and i'm in the state of Oklahoma.

Thanks in advance!

If your I-94 is still unexpired and has more than 14 days before it expires, get thee to the nearest SSA office and apply for your SSN. If your I-94 is expired then your will need to file for AOS,EAD,AP and wait for the EAD card or GC before getting a SSN. You can apply in your maiden name--just don't tell the SSA you are married; or you can file in your married name using the marriage certificate as the document to change your name. If you apply for AOS in your married name you can then apply for your SSN in your married name.

If your I-94 is expired I would file AOS ASAP so you can get your GC and then your SSN and then apply for your DL.

Good luck,

Dave

I agree with DAVE&ROZA, according to your timeline you arrived in March, so you should have plenty of time to wait for your marriage certificate to arrive then take it and your Passport to get your social security card in your married name, thats what we did, or if you are in a rush you can get it now, in your maiden name and change it when your marriage certificate arrives.

Yes my I-194 will expire on June 23rd , 2012 so i still have days left right? Does it mean i can still apply for the SSN using my midle name? I don't understand that..are you talking about my surname when i was still single? Or my midle name which is my mother's surname when she was still single? and i don't get this one too in your married name using the marriage certificate as the document to change your name

We're still on process about the AOS..

If we will apply for my SSN tomorrow does this affect everything? What if they will found out that i'm already married the day i applied for SSN yet im still usin my midle name to my application? Just making sure i won't be in trouble guys..

Step 1: Go to the county clerk's office and get a copy of your marriage certificate.

Step 2: Using your marriage certificate, apply for a Social Security number in your married name more than two weeks before your I-94 expires.

Who told you that you could not apply for a SSN in your married name?

To apply for a SSN in your married name, all you have to do is take your passport and a copy of your marriage certificate to the Social Security office and apply for a SSN using your married name.

Then you could have taken your passport, your Social Security card, and your marriage certificate to the DPS to get your driver license. You could have gotten your driver license in your married name.

By the way, why wouldn't your husband allow you to get a SSN until after you were married?

We don't have our marriage contract on hand yet thats why i applied using my maiden name because im n rush.

I need to get an SSN so i can take written exam and not forget everything i learned from my driving class.

If we will wait for the marriage contract before i will apply for SSN it would take longer o.O

I applied for SSN after we got married but i used my maiden name and will visit the SS Office again after applying for adjustment of status :)

You're in a rush? Seriously? How long does it take to pick up a copy of your marriage certificate at the county clerk's office?

Why wouldn't your husband let you get a SSN before you were married?

When I went in to get my SSN, they refused to give it to me in my married name, even with marriage certificate. They said I had to wait until I got my Green Card. Some offices do things differently (not correctly, just differently...and wrong.)

Yes, in fact, this is the fastest way to get a SSN.

Why?

you go to SSA office, apply, and the clerk takes your passport and I-94. Clerk look up name in passport, name in visa in computer system. Computer system called 'SAVE' database.

SSA clerk can find you in SAVE database via name in VISA. SSN application accepted, you get SSN number next day, go in person next day to get. Card arrive in mail in a few weeks later.

AFTER you are married, you can change name with SSA, go in person again.

Many hassle to wait, Many hassle to apply in married name - SAVE DATABASE not know you in married name when you first apply. Later? after have SSN ? can change name easily with SSA office (must go in person later)

Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.
