As always, thanks for sharing your wealth of SSN knowledge : )

Just a couple of additional questions...if you are just a CPR, are you still eligible to receive a non-restricted SSN card?

What is the advantage of having this card? Is this something that "must" be done? The thought of going down to that office again here in NYC is somewhat depressing

Thanks!

I-751

12/19/07 – Mail I-751

12/21/07 – Received in Vermont

1/3/08 – NOA extending Greencard for one year

2/15/08 - Biometrics appointment

11/28/08 - InfoPass appointment to get I-551 stamp in passport to extend residency for another year

12/3/08 - Receive email notification that my status has now changed to "card production ordered" : )

As far as SSA is concerned CPR status is PR status. I guess the biggest advantage is that you have a work authorization document that never expires. At some point with the CPR when you file for the removal of conditions your 2 year I-551 card will have expired and you have a restricted SSN card. So at that point you have no proof of authorization to work. Of course you can go into an immigration office with the one year extension letter and get a I-551 stamp, but that's only good for a year and if you don't have your 10 year I-551 card by then you have to go get another stamp.

Unless you live in the Brooklyn, NY area you can go to any SSA office to apply.

10. Conditional Resident Alien

A conditional resident alien is an alien granted a 2-year period of permanent resident status based on (1) a “qualifying” marriage to a U.S. citizen or national, a permanent resident or (2) qualifying as an alien entrepreneur. A conditional resident alien has the same INS documents as an LAPR except that the I-551 expires after 2 years. For enumeration purposes conditional resident aliens are treated as aliens lawfully admitted for permanent residence.

Well, so far we have not received the SS card, but we got the I-551. As we have been married less than 2 years I assumed this would be conditional status for 2 years, but it simply says permanent resident and its expiration date is marked as 10 years. does anyone know if this means I won't have to file for removal of conditions in a year and a half, or if I need to inquire with DHS? thanks!!

Others have received the 10-year card accidentally and have been professionally advised to file I-751 on schedule in similar circumstances. You can search the britishexpats group for posts from SeEcretGarden and MrPink for their experience.

If you were married for less than 2 years when Permanent Resident status was granted, you know you should be a CR and should file I-751 to be accurate. See the recent post I made about the fellow who applied for citizenship based on what his card (incorrectly) said and had his application bounced out because it was too early for him to apply.

You can always check with USCIS for the date the PR was granted and follow that.
