Back in 2007 I moved to the United States with my husband, and US Citizen, and I filed for residency and was approved in 2008. Since then, we were forced to move back to Canada after we both lost our jobs and couldn't afford to stay. We have since settled in Canada, and are planning a vacation to California this summer, when I realized I still had my PR Card.

I'm curious to know if I need to file the I-407 Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Residence Status if my original PR card has already expired? We don't want to get to the border and be shocked that we aren't allowed to cross, especially since we have spend so much money on our trip.

Thanks!

If you have abandoned your status you should fill out the form and return your Green Card to a US Embassy before going to the border. I had a friend that was denied entry because he had a long expired green card. The officers asked him for his card and he said he had lost it about 10 years earlier... they pulled him off a bus and told him to walk back to Canada and file the form at the Embassy. They may let you give up your card at the border or Airport but why take the chance I say. Once you had in the card they will give you back a stamped copy of the form that you should always have on you when you travel to the US. Maybe others have experience with handing it over at the POE but if it was me I would want the receipt with me saying I gave it up....

About that I-407 - I recall we had to go in person to file it.
